Making The Sale

The days of tossing up a sponsor's banner, grabbing a beer and watching the sales stack up while puffing a joint are over. With new sites popping up and going down everyday, you have to put in work to earn a dollar.

How often have you heard one Webmaster say ?Sponsor XYZ sucks -- they must be shaving,? but at the same time you have a decent ratio with the same sponsor. Before you throw in the towel, take a look at your site from a surfer?s point of view and be honest with yourself. Does your site look like you made it in 15 minutes? Does the site have spelling errors? Would you purchase something from that site? When designing sites such as maryjanegraphix.com or tmanvideo.moonfruit.com I pay close attention to color schemes, layouts and load times. A surfer is not going to wait around for 6 years for your page to load remember there are still a lot of modem users out there. The same rules that apply in the real world also apply in our virtual world. If you walk into a restaurant and it smells like a dogs ass, I?m pretty sure you won't be staying.

Like it or not, to make sales in this arena, you have to develop basic marketing skills. Remember back when you were a surfer trolling, seeking out free material, you knew that clicking on a banner was a lot like walking into a minefield. You?d fall into pop-up Armageddon bombarded by everything from spy cams to pheromones to attract women. A lot of surfers avoid clicking on banners for the reasons mentioned above. Text links with decent descriptions will get more clicks than banners will everyday of the week.

When creating galleries, it's necessary to sell the site to the surfer. Keep in mind that you are not the only person pushing that particular website. In the brief moment while you have the surfer's attention, you have to close the sale. Present surfers with information that will make them whip that credit card out before they even get to the site tour.

The bottom line is that quality outweighs quantity, no matter how you slice it. It doesn?t matter if you get 100K hits a day if your getting low quality crap traffic your sales will suffer. Keep in mind that productive traffic is where your bread and butter comes from, and that is going to bring in those sales while at the same time help your site to grow.

If you?re been wondering why your galleries are not getting accepted on some the high volume TGP?s then you may be falling short in the quality area. You can spend 30 minutes making 10 half-assed galleries, or you can use that same time and create one or two hard-hitting galleries that will produce sales without wasting bandwidth. Also consider purchasing content to make your galleries stand out from those using the over exposed sponsor-provided content -- this will give your galleries a fresh look.
