do you let others hold you back, or are you hell bent on success?

what i mean is, do you attempt to excel in what you do, and let everything else in your life take 2nd place to that... or do you find yourself being held back by those you love, respect, etc?

your thoughts?

I have a lot more ambition than I'm able to put into play right now. Too many demands on my home-time prevent me from fully immersing myself in my 'career' world.

But we all make choices right?

If I *could* I'd work a lot more and have lots of sex and that would be my life.

As it IS, I choose to be with my family and enjoy the benefits that one receives from that. I work full-time but nowhere near as much as I want to. But I have a family and I have the joys that come from that.

To dedicate yourself completely to your career, you must have an INCREDIBLY understanding family, or you should be on your own (in my opinion anyways).

Why choose to get into a relationship/family environment if you're not willing to put the time and effort into it's maintenance.

i love that film.

Bud: How much is enough?
Gordon Gekko: It's not a question of enough, pal. It's a zero sum game, somebody wins, somebody loses. Money itself isn't lost or made, it's simply transferred from one perception to another.

Yup and when Gordon is on the beach and calls bud and tells him....

Money never sleeps. Just made $800,000 on Hong Kong gold, it?s being wired to you. Play with it. You?ve done good but you?ve gotta keep doing good. I?ve shown you how the game works, now school's out.?

Gordon Gekko: Ever wonder why fund managers can't beat the S&P 500? 'Cause they're sheep, and sheep get slaughtered.

Bud: This is really a nice club, Mr. Gekko.
Gordon Gekko: Yeah, not bad for a City College boy. I bought my way in, now all these Ivy league schmucks are sucking my kneecaps.

Bud: ?What about hard work??

Gekko: ?What about it? You work hard. I bet you stayed up all night analyzing that dog shit stock you gave me, huh? Where did it get you? My father worked like an elephant pushing ectrical supplies, ended up at 49 dying of a heart attack. Wake up will ya pal?! If you are not inside you?re outside. Ok? And I am not talking about some $400,000 a year working Wall Street stiff flying first class and being comfortable. I am talking about liquid. Rich enough to have your own jet, rich enough not to waste time. $100,000,000. A player or nothing! Now, you have what it took to get in my office, the real question is if you?ve got what it takes to stay here.?

Gordon Gekko: You see that building? I bought that building ten years ago. My first real estate deal. Sold it two years later, made an $800,000 profit. It was better than sex. At the time I thought that was all the money in the world. Now it's a day's pay.

Gekko: The richest one percent of this country owns half our country's wealth, five trillion dollars. One third of that comes from hard work, two thirds comes from inheritance, interest on interest accumulating to widows and idiot sons and what I do, stock and real estate speculation. It's bullshit. You got ninety percent of the American public out there with little or no net worth. I create nothing. I own.

Gordon Gekko: If you need a friend, get a dog.

Gordon Gekko: The point is ladies and gentlemen that greed, for lack of a better word, is good. Greed is right. Greed works. Greed clarifies, cuts through and captures the essence of the evolutionary spirit. Greed, in all of it's forms - greed for life, for money, knowledge - has marked the upward surge of mankind and greed - you mark my words - will not only save Teldar Paper but that other malfunctioning corporation called the USA. Thank you.

Gordon Gekko: The most valuable commodity I know of is information.

there are too many classic lines in this movie.

Did you think you could've gotten this far this fast with anyone else, huh? That you'd be out there dicking someone like Darien? Naw... you'd still be cold calling widows and dentists tryin' to sell 'em 20 shares of some dog shit stock. I took you in... a NOBODY. I opened the doors for you... showed you how the system works... the value of information... how to get it. Fulham oil, Brant resources, geodynamics and this is how you fucking pay me back you cockroach. I gave you Darien. I gave you your manhood I gave you everything. You could've been one of the great ones buddy. I look at you and see myself... WHY?

Father:?He?s using you kid. He?s got your prick in his back pocket, but you?re too blind to see it.?

Bud:?No, what I see is a jealous old machinist who can?t stand to see his son has become more successful than he is.?

Father: ?What you see is a guy who never measured a man?s success by the size of his wallet.?

Bud: ?That?s because you never had the guts to go out in the world and stake your claim.?

From the thread title I thought you were asking a different question. As in, do you let other peoples negative reactions to your ideas and plans deter you from achieving your goals.

So I'll answer that question instead, haha. No. I love when people tell me "no, you can't do that, you're not being realistic." Makes me want to do it even more.

I remember in high school sitting in a board room with a bunch of teachers and counselors. They wanted me to enroll in a bunch of computer science classes and become a programmer. They said I couldn't move to California, it would never work.

Yeh? Fuck you.

That's the biggest crock of shit I've heard today. Money is NOT a "zero sum game". Money is created all the time. That looks like a line that simply sounded good for a movie.

I attempt to excel in everything that I can see having some type of a payoff.

My family has come to accept the fact that no matter what they say or how they feel about me that I will do whatever it takes to reach my goals.

No one in my family is wealthy. I have an uncle who is rich now and well on his way to being wealthy but that is him and not me. No one else will show my family how to accumulate wealth and how money works because they don't know.

They just know what they have heard or seen but not what they have actually done.

It's time for someone to change that and that person will be me.

My quote that I keep in my email signature goes like this:

"Your dreams of success are my nightmares of mediocrity."

It's funny how many people don't even realize what the quote means even after I tell them.

The people who do know either think that I am an asshole or they love the quote.

I've noticed it before. Have always liked it.

Those people who think you're an asshole for it are the same people that work 9-5, live paycheck to paycheck, and will never get ahead in life.
