Do you give insulin shots to your cats?

Does anyone here have to give insulin shots to their cats for anything?

For all animals, all you need to do is pinch the spot behind their neck/shoulders and inject into the skin, correct?

I know you inject insulin for humans in to fat. I don't know for pets, sorry.

A friend's family cat has diabetes, but no shots. Just pill stuff they mix in it's food or give it to the cat as a pill. I think they mix it with the food. I don't really know the details other than they don't have to do the shots.

To be honest, I'm not sure... but that is the most recommended hold by vets to give oral medication so animals can't move as easily. So I imagine that's accurate.

My parents have a diabetic cat that I have to watch when they go out of town. She gets insulin twice a day. Just raise the skin up on the neck and inject.

Clip pet hair to better inject insulin -- needles are specially coated to minimize discomfort, but due to the needle's small and thin size, clipping a patch of hair on the pet's neck or between their shoulder blades can make the injection process easier to visualize.

Never done insulin, but I have had to do other injections on my cats (allergies and vitamin K) along with IV fluids for a cat with kidney failure.

I was taught to make a tent by pulling up the loose skin with my thumb, index and middle finger to form a pocket between the skin and the body tissue...then inject in that pocket.

There's alot of info here...

I have two diabetic cats! Imagine the odds of a thread like this on GFY?? Insulin treatment can really stabalize a cats condition. Mine get two shots daily, and they actually remind me when to shoot them up since it coincides with dinner/treat time.

I've always injected just below the skin on the back, upper thigh, alternating sides each shot. But do whatever your vet advises.

been doin that for yrs to a cat i had yes... wanna know something ? just be careful if you inject in the neck to do it sideways and not too far, easy to go through the skin out again if the cats a bit skinny...

Thanks. So basically an inch deep (or anywhere within that "pinch") will work?

Just curious. How do you know your cat is diabetic? A vet should have advised you on how to give the shots and how much to give. An overdose of insulin will send a cat into shock and kill it a lot faster than untreated diabetes will.
