It's not 100% but the signups and sales that you make from the traffic it does target correctly will more than make up for it. :winkwink:

There is one serious problem I see with this concept....

I have chosen to promote AFF over the last couple of years, as I felt that this site showed a degree of integrity that isn't always present on a number of the other adult sites or dating sites.

This type of ad is moving in the opposite direction. How so, you ask?

The girls or "content" used in the geo-ads are not going to be found on your site. So, now, when a customer clicks on the ad, and joins specifically to meet one of the girls in the ad..they are going to be sadly disappointed. In fact, this is no different then the other sites "seeding" the personals with a numbr of dummy personals.

This is completely different then regular ads, which show any number of pretty gals. These ads are claiming that the girls really are located in your home town...and, as I mentioned above..they aren't.

Uusally a great program...but I am disappointed at the direction you have gone with these.

I have a C++ script I'll sell to do that now. You'll still need to purchase the DB.

Great idea. Then this could be used in conjunction with the banners. And eliminates my worries in the previous page, regarding misleading the consumer.

sickkittens 11-20-2004 09:01 PM

Also, it would be nice if the background colors could be customized to match pages. Just an idea.

I think I may be answering my own question, but can you just take the URL from the text link and use that as your own custom geo-IP text link?

i.e.

http://adultfriendfinder.com/search/...35&override=1.

?

Will this way count hits and credit signups?

This, they have already implemented. Just look for BGColor=ffffff in the html code, and you can change the background colors to what ever you want.

Ignore this. This way is wrong.

Finally there is someone with a brain. Congrats man!
When some sponsor is overused, we all now what happens.

One main problem it shows a the name of a town about 20 miles away from me, but when I click the link, a town of the same name in another state results are shown. That's going to hurt conversions.

I know its not 100% but you would think surfing from Chicago, you would be referred to someone in Chicago, not Hammond Indiana. :1orglaugh

u are way over analysing

the guy hasnt actually fallen in love with the girl he has seen in the advert - when he gets to the site sure he isnt going to see that exact same girl but its not very hard to consider the scenario where the guy doesnt see the initial girl but with two minutes has seen some other girl that IS in his area and has already forgotton about the first one he saw

none of these work 100% for instance this one you post says I am in fresno and I am actually in santa monica right now. The whole point is yes its not 100% but for the people it does hit they pull out their credit card 3 times more. I for one am using them and they totally fucking work. If your not using these ads for aff then you are throwing money out the window !

49thParallel 11-21-2004 10:43 AM

I have noticed that no one from AFF has chosen to address the issue of false advertising. As I mentioned above, by using this type of ad, we are inferring that these girls actually live in the surfers area, and are wanting to meet. This simply isn't the case.

A mainstream comparison would be the local stereo shop showing Sanyo and Pioneer Stereos in their ads, when they don't even sell these brands. And the ironic thing is, if this technique was used in mainstream, the regulators would be on the store and fining them almost immediately.

And yes, I have the choice of not using these ads in my own promotions. But, that still doesn't eliminate the use of what I consider misleading advertising by this otherwise, good program.

The reason no-one mentions it is because its hardly relevant and i'm not entirely sure this is false advertising. First off, it can be argued that:

(1) AFF is showing images of the girls that you will meet or at least an example of the kind of girls you will meet.

(2) AFF has a large enough user base to almost guarantee that you will infact meet other users who come from your local area.

(3) AFF is following what is essentially advertising norms where concerns this specific kind of online advertising.

(4) The "Sanyo brand" example is a bad one because AFF could be deemed to be advertising the "Female" brand and they have a lot of that on offer.

(5) Shut the fuck up and push these banners. Make some bank and fuck some hoes and maybe you wont be so uptight.

That really isn't your decision to make. I'll bet eventually the FTC will get involved. It will be up to them ultimately since AFF is in the US and this would definitely fall into the jurisdiction of the FTC. All it takes is one pissed off member to file a complaint and make a few follow-up calls and the FTC will crack down.

Seems the geo DB is not so great for canada.
I'm in port moody, and it tells me i'm in new westminster - that is actually not too bad as its only a 15 minute drive from here.

However, it shows Toronto for one vancouver friend of mine
and it shows Ottawa for another vancouver friend. Thats
quite far away (5 hours by plane). Hmm..perhaps that
might still work. Perhaps the ad should say "Find someone to fuck in Toronto while you are there on your next business trip".

From my experience and research, MaxMind.com offers the most accurate data lists for IP-to-City worldwide.

If Lars or AFF see a lot of inaccuracies, they should just shell out a little extra and get MaxMind's data :2 cents:

Just for an example, I was shocked to see they listed me at 'Sabanillas', which isnt even a city but a small region of a few blocks. In comparison, AFF shows me as San Jose (the capital city of Costa Rica) which isn't where I am at all.

Consider this a free tip, do with it what you will :winkwink:

Jamdin 11-21-2004 02:56 PM

It puts my city in Wichita, fifty miles away from me.

Tala 11-21-2004 03:04 PM

Very nice! I can't wait to see what tweaks you guys come up with! Always innovative, AFF just plain ROCKS. :thumbsup
