We bought a small ranch a couple of years ago in North Florida, but ended up selling it last year, because we couldn't stay in the area.
We had chickens, fresh eggs every morning, over 250 grape plants, plums, 2 horses... It was a lot of fun, and a very lovely and peaceful place.
We're thinking of buying one in Mexico, with a couple of cows to have fresh milk, chickens, ducks, etc., probably a year from now.

I'm a city guy, but I love the country, and there is nothing that compares to that fresh air and sense of freedom.
So, I was wondering: has anyone here lived in a ranch before? What is your opinion about ranches?

But - I am nearby Philadelphia, and my neighbors have all their teeth, and very few marry their sisters.

I lived on a real ranch once. Don't recommend it.

I've never lived in a real ranch, I mean, which slaughtered animals, incest or no-teeth ranch hands.
But in my little "ranchito" I had a great time. It was awesome to get up in the mornings, and pee outside without the neighbors seeing me.
The high of the day was always picking the eggs from the chicken coup, making scrambled eggs for breakfast...

How can someone prefer a McDonalds breakfast to that?

Grew up on one.
2200 acre ranch. 8 ponds and one small lake. Cows, horses the whole thing. The only thing that sucks is as far back as I can remember we were up at 4:45 in a.m. feeding animals before going back and getting ready to go to school.

Ranching is good money here in Oklahoma. Lot of people that do it for a living are multi millionaires.

no man, that is too much work.
I'm thinking of having 2 or 3 cows, no Holsteins, just regular meat cows, so you don't have to milk them several times a day. Just once, at 8am or so, if their babies haven't drank it all.
Nothing serious, just a few acres (25 to 50), with a vegetable garden, etc.
More play than work.

I stayed at one for a week with one of my first girlfriends in California who was watching the horses for a friend of hers.

It was desolate back in one of the canyons out beyond the San Fernando Valley.

Fucking spooky as hell up there. All night long we hear coyotes howling. We thought we heard someone walking outside the windows. The wind was blowing and making the screen door sound like someone was opeing it.

Nearly got bit by this big ass rattlesnake.

It was like in the movie Scream.

I couldn't wait to get the fuck out of there.

And cleaning horse shit is not my thing.

My ex's family has a few thousand acres in Eastern Montana.

When "folks" would stop by it was a big event, could watch their trucks coming up the driveway for 10 minutes.

Always was a great break to go there and hunt or just chill.

I prefer a nice native girl or two and tropical island these days spear fishing, but a little of both worlds would do just fine ;)

We've ranched in Arizona, Colorado, Wyoming, South Dakota and Nebraska. Before starting in this business almost 7 years ago. Hubby was a true to life cowboy, not rodeo 'cowboy', a real working one

Horses, cattle and alot of haying ....

It does run you. Requires extreme responsibility.

My uncle has had a dairy farm for as long as I can remember. Has over 300 head I believe. Every family gathering, he would take a nap at about 3-4 in the afternoon and then head home to milk the cows.

He isn't rich, but he does have 5 kids and they have always had nice things, so he certainly does well. This isn't the same for all farmers by any means though. He's a smart farmer, very hard working as well.

I can't wait until they come to Ohio. I'm gonna have them working while I sit on the porch like Massa.
