Thinking about moving to Japan

So where are some good places to live? Friendly to white people that dont speak Japanese at all, but willing to learn.

I am seriously pondering dropping my life here in the USA (personal life, not business) and heading off the Japan for the time of my life.

It seems really enticing, enough so, that I am thinking about dumping my girlfriend, selling my car, and flying straight to Taiwan International!

Whats rent like? (compare pricing to USA, dont say its really high and be thinking about what someone makes yearly in Japan)

How are the women?
What types of attractions are there that'll keep a person busy a ton of the time.
How much is food? Electricity, Water, Clothes, Cars?

What is the concentration of whites living in Japan? (atleast in major cities)

What are jobs like there for most people? Do they have enough money to be able to spend it on frivolous, or not 'neccesary to life' things?

How well would an English Teacher for Japanese students do?

That's fascinating! Our (my gf and I) next destination is Spain for a year or so, and then Australia or Hong Kong.

Good luck on this journey man

The women are hot... that's all I know. It's funny, I've been having the same thoughts. I'm really tempted to drop everything here and move out of North America in a few years.

I wish mine wasnt so close minded, and I'd bring her with me... she doesnt want to go and thinks Asians are 'nasty'. So the only alternative is to dump her, to bad though, I really like her.

That is too bad. It's a good thing *I* am not close-minded, she's the one who wants to live in Spain for 2 years now...

May we ask what draws you to Japan?

For the longest time recently, I've been wanting to go to China or Japan - it just looks so great!

Theres lights and big life everywhere (in the bigger cities atleast) and it looks like theres so much to do, and experience. I've been working online ever since I was still in highschool and even skipped college to continue working online. I've had my same girlfriend for the longest time as well, and she's holding me back. Before her, I've only had about 10 girls, and ever since, no more, and Im not able to enjoy life in my way, with her. I do love her though, but I am really thinking about saying screw it all, and just leaving.

If you are really serious about moving out to Japan at least take a 2 week holiday over there, there's no better way to find out how a place is than to experience it first hand.

First Taiwan is not Japan.

Second it is a VERY expensive place to live

Third although most younger Japanese speak English do not expect to accepted into their culture or workplace.

Unless you have a job waiting or lost of money stay home.

My girlfriend's brother loves China, but I hear Japan is a much better place to live. I don't know much about either place, so don't take anything I say as a suggestion :-)

As far as the girlfriend thing goes.. Well, same thing happened to me with my ex after being with her for 3 years ("first love"). It was when I was with her that I came up with the idea to live in Australia for a year - ALONE - so you can see why she's an EX! :-)

LOL. Now I'm happily "stuck" with a girl I love, so I can't do anything about that. Good thing we're both travelers (one year in Spain for her, another one for me in Hong Kong!).

Yep, A lot of true points here.

A very nationalistic society, "yankees" aren't greeted with open arms everywhere

If you do that - make it a CHEAP VACATION. You will need the money for move-in costs. Don't stay at a 5-star hotel while looking for an apartment. LOL. I did that same mistake when I moved to Panama for a few months about two years ago.

You don't know anything about Japan but you're ready to drop everything? I would like to move to Central America, but I'm researching various places thoroughly. Moving to a "different world" is quite a culture shock, need to be prepared.

Costa Rica! I lived in Panama for 8 months.. and it sucks after about a month or two. From my travels across Central America during that time, I realized that Costa Rica would have been a better choice.

Also - before you move - take a friend and travel through Central America. Doing it by car is fun, but not easy (border shit). I did Panama border-to-border (Columbia<>Costa Rica) over night... and man, I had to "bribe" 5 police officers who harassed me during the 20-hour drive

what exactly is classified as 'expensive'? I was looking at a site, and rent runs somewhere between 1k-2k for a private apt... which is not bad at all...

Well of course, I'll check out how living is for foreigners, but it sounds pretty good, and Im very flexible on new adjustments in my life...

Just gotta get a rough estimate on pricing of everything, then I'll dive right in. No better way to experience it.

I lived in Okinawa Japan for 2 years while in the Navy....Japan is about honor and discipline and their laws are a little squirrley and scary....and ultra conservative. They can be tough on Americans if you break a law.

If your in a cab and the cab driver kills someone, its your fault and you have to provide for the family. So if that happens, get out and run real fast.

Chicks love Americans because they think we are all rich beyond our dreams.

If the yen sucks against the dollar, things can be more expensive but nothing is lucury over there unless you go to main cities.

KMan lives in Thailand and he loves it and is an adult webmaster.

I hear japan is amazing. I took a few years of Japanese in school and we learned a lot about culture. Some students in my class got to go to Japan for a week. They said it was breathtaking.

Most japanese only speak engrish, no english at all or are scared to talk to you, taiwan isn't japan, you won't get a job anywhere beside a slave contract english teacher job that gets you peanuts, if you already were at an university, otherwise nobody wants you and you won't get a visa and can go home.

Japan is a xenophobic country and generally NOT foreigner friendly.

Moving to a country you know nothing about but you "always wanted to go there" sounds kinda stupid in my opinion.

I think you would be surprised at the size of that apartment.

Wrong beside you are a university graduade with higher level working experience (mostly programmers and bankers) or you have lots of money.

In this world nobody want immigrants without money or without high school certified skills with working experience.

You're even very unlikely to get an appartment because almost nobody rents to foreigners. Those who normally do rent out appartments you could never pay for.

Japan is the only country I really
have an interest in visiting some
day. The reason I like Japan so
well is because I feel it is like my
own culture and nation, except
on steroids. The Japanese I have
dealt with have also all been
extremely friendly and positive,
and the Japanese in general equal
my own affinity for science and
technology.

Go Japan.

Why Japan? Go to Greece, where no body cares what you do or who you are. All you need to think about there is "where to party tonight". Everybody else thinks the same thing.

I never experienced any anti-American sentiments while I was in Tokyo. In fact, Asian girls as a whole seem to love Americans (mostly because they think you are rich, but you also look different and exotic to them)

The language barrier is a real bitch though.

If you have enough money to move to Japan, why not consider Switzerland or Monaco instead? At least the language and culture will be familiar.

WANTING to go there is enough to actually do it, its the WORLD people, we live here! I refuse to be stuck on one continent because I dont know anything about another... I'll find out when I get there.

THEY will care. I've jumped continents and doing it in an English speaking country was hard enough but Japan isn't a different country - it is a different world. Trust me, I understand that excitment but when you don't even know the cities of the country they will care that you have that level of interest in their society.
