Two planes almost collide on the runway at LAX...

Why you ask. Because when the air traffic controllers were changing shifts, they miss understood each other.

And off the record, they say they are understaffed.

Now doesn't that make you feel better about flying. Our lives under some guys that are understaff and have poor communications with each other.

Sorry guys,

Maybe this will help.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

WAGES, HOURS, AND FRINGE BENEFITS

Entry-level Air Traffic Controllers start at $24,734 per year at the General
Schedule-7 (GS-7). Journey-level wages for controllers depend on the size
and complexity of the facility where they work. For example, for smaller
towns in California like Chico and Modesto, the rate at the journey-level is
$33,320, (GS-10); while, at the Sacramento airport, the journey-level pay is
$39,406 (GS-11). In busier airports, the pay can go as high as $86,275
(GS-14). Top pay for journey-level Flight Service Station Controllers is
$61,401 (GS-12). Many controllers receive additional pay to compensate for
higher living costs in expensive areas.

But 13 1/2 years ago, same problem and it wasn't an almost. Because of the same mistake, a plane coming in for landing, landed on top of a plane taking off. Killing about 30.

They need to put some one way runways on there. One for take off, one to land. Very simple. Like our streets in downtown. One Way with a big DO NOT ENTER sign in front.

I always picture them playing their Xbox, girlfriends/boyfriends coming to their work place, surfing the net.

I think these guys should get paid more than pilots.

Yea same here WG

I just flew to FLL from BWI on Southwest last weekend and the fucking right hand didnt' know what the left one was doing the entire flight. The attendants would get on the mic and be like "you can get up and strech your legs, use the rest room, blah blah" and 2 seconds later the pilot get's on and is like "We are still climbing, remain in your seats with your belt fastened and seats in the upright position" ... Then landing they are handing out drinks while we are descending, taking orders for more drinks - we asked how much longer.. "oh about an hour" 2 minutes later captian get's on and is like "we will be landing shortly, tray tables up, seats upright.. blah blah" on the ground in 10 minutes with fresh drinks still in hand LOL Madness!

Talk about scary,

I was landing at LAX about 4 months ago, watching us about to land, and about 5 feet from touching ground, the pilot starting climbing again, I nearly shit my pants, so we had to go back up and do the whole complete 360 and start again, I wonder why the hell he would have done that, maybe there was a plane up ahead that never took off? Who knows, but that shit was scary...

If you ever get free time and have a quality scanner, sit outside LAX for about 20 minutes (In-N-Out is just outside LAX and makes a nice place to do this from while consuming a double-double). You will here the ground dispatcher never stop talking for the entire 20 minutes. There will never be a pause. That is how busy LAX is. There are 2 ground dispatchers. One for each side. There are also 2 air dispatchers. One for each side.

I've dispatched vans into the airport and out of it for transportation companies. The only time it has stress is Thanksgiving and Christmas and Mother's Day (everyone goes to see mom or she comes to see you on this day).

On Thanksgiving and Christmas it is busy for 3 or 4 days into and out of the holidays and Christmas goes into New Years because of the Rose Parade and College Football at the Rose Bowl. It is so busy that you must put 9 people to 9 different places on one van. If it drops off 2 in Diamond Bar and 2 in Upland it picks up 4 in Ontario Airport as it passes by. Then drops off the 9 people and picks up 9 more, dropping 4 off in Ontario and then grabbing 4 more on the rest of the way to LAX.

Do that and multiply it by 60 vans you are in charge of. Then make it a 10 hour shift and it never stops. People never stop talking and needing help finding a customer or needing a call out at an apartment complex. A driver doesn't get his page for a pickup and you need to scramble a van and put the customer on the luggage in the back and they do it because it is Christmas and there are no other ways to get to the airport on time. They might even do it and tip the driver for 'saving the day' for them.

I can't imagine doing that job 365 days a year like that. LAX dispatchers do that job 40 hours + a week. The only thing that made it bareable for me is that you can smoke and drink on those periods. Anything you want, just make fucking money and fill the vans. Plus the owner walks up each time you have an hour where ALL 60 vans went to or from an airport with total capacity. For me that was about $500 a day bonus.

Now... why did we pay $150,000 for an airport tower that looks like something out of star wars? Looking at it you can imagine those black short beings that steal droids popping up and shooting at you.

Here Read This:

On August 19, 2004, about 1455 Pacific daylight time, a Southwest Airlines Boeing 737-7H4, N461WN, was overflown by an Asiana Airlines Boeing 747 while the Southwest airplane was holding on the active runway 24L, at Los Angeles International Airport, Los Angeles, California. The Boeing 737 was operated by Southwest Airlines under the provisions of 14 CFR Part 121. There was no damage to the airplane nor injuries to the 182 passengers and crew. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed and an instrument flight plan had been filed.

On August 24th Southwest Airlines safety personnel reported to the National Transportation Safety Board investigator that the captain of Southwest flight 440 reported that an Asiana Boeing 747 came with in 200 feet of his airplane while it was executing a missed approach. Southwest flight 440 was in position for takeoff on runway 24L and holding. The captain's statement indicates that he became concerned when the Asiana airplane did not come in to his view as it should have when landing on the parallel runway 24R. He began to move his airplane off the runway when the Asiana airplane overflew his, coming within 200 feet. Preliminary information indicates that the captain of the Asiana Boeing 747 identified the runway conflict and executed a missed approach.

Flying is inherently less dangerous than driving, especially in some areas around LA ;)

Even taking 911 into account, I think the statistic is that you'd have to fly once daily for somewhere around 7 years to insure you'd be in a commercial crash.

The worst thing is that the number of traffic controlers that kill them sleves is very high.

I think the security checks and dress code for Canadians at LAX seems quite lax (haha) lately judging by the naked Canadian dude that got under the Qantas plane last week there so you should be fine.
