EVERY fucking year I go thru this shit

Every year after the time change fucking winter depression sets in. I love the colder weather but less sunlight makes me lazy, unmotivated, and depressed. Not like sitting on the couch all day long lazy, I still work 8 to 12 hours a day, but I have this impending sense of doom and a real decline in my normal levels of enthusiasm, motivation, and my LOL arrogance. I don't feel like doing anything and don't look forward to anything. Anyone else have this condition? and if so what can be done about it besides heavy medications?

Got that but does not help. Even she notices a difference in me since the time change. I use those fake firelogs. I hate the smell real logs imbed in your clothes and carpets.

You live in Florida. Quit bitching. You don't get sub zero temps and foot upon foot of snow.

I wish I was back in Orlando. I'll switch if you'd like.

I thought this was the best time of year in Florida. When I lived there I hated the summers and loved the winters.

IT IS the nicest time of the year. I love the winter as far as the weather. Then why does it depress me?

Seasonal depression is quite common. Frequently it has to do with the period of sunlight your body recieves each day. Try getting one of those anti-depression lamps and keep it aimed at you while you work.

Sounds like you may have SAD. A lot of people get it in winter with the longer nights, etc. I think I have it to a degree. My depressions tend to come at the end of november.

I couldnt imagine summer all year round, that would depress me. I need 20 below and feet of snow. Depression would be no snow for snowmobiling. I suspect your no different than millions of people. Stay away from meds whatever you do though.

Tanning beds work wonders...

I lived in Erie PA for a long time... Tanning beds got rid of the winter depression...

Unfortunately, that still left the "livin in Erie PA" depression, which required moving

Sounds like it could be seasonal affective disorder (SAD)

"People with seasonal affective disorder (SAD) instinctively shift their melatonin levels with the seasons, paralleling the hibernation patterns of mammals.

This does not appear to be true for those who don't react to shorter days and longer nights with deepening depression.

In patients who had SAD, the duration of melatonin secretion became longer in winter and shorter in summer, just as it occurs in other mammals. That could be controlling this panoply of changes that occurs in people when they get depressed in the winter.

Seasonal affective disorder, or "winter depression," is a psychiatric disorder that strikes during winter months, when daylight hours are naturally shortened. The disorder in humans seems to mimic the behavior exhibited by hibernating animals, such as increased sleep and decreased activity.

Melatonin, a hormone produced by the pineal gland in response to the darkness of nighttime, promotes sleep and helps regulate the body clock. Hibernation in mammals is triggered when the brain responds to the body's increase in melatonin production."

That's interesting. I love sunshine so I am going to look for one of these lamps. I will have my own little sun on my desk

I'm completely serious here, jump in a tanning bed. Most people become vitamin D deficient during the winter, due to less direct sunshine. Drinking lots of milk and/or taking a D vitamin supplement might help. Drugs aren't always the answer, but if you get the winter blues bad enough drugs might be the answer.

SDD, Seasonal Depression Disorder.... Or something similar..

Get a sun lamp, not a stupid tanning lamp.. I'm talking about a lamp that puts off the correct type of light to simulate the suns rays that give you the seratonin that you need when you are out in the summer time..

Something like this will work out!

Check it out..

Seasonal affective disorder. Now that I'm living in Cali where they do have daylight savings time, we're in the same boat.

We had to move our office in an area of the house that gets very little light. Someone I know works where they make them in Montreal so they brought me one - the best gift I've received!
Helps tremendously during the long dark Canadian evenings for sure & I love the winter but would get the winter blues despite that!
Anyhow - the one I have is the SADELITE (hahahah imagine how I chuckled when I read the name!) from Northern Light Technologies - here's a link http://www.northernlighttechnologies.com/index.php

What a great thread! Lots of good advice.

I too have the same thing, however, mine is more intense. I also get overwhelming panic attacks along with the depression and have a very hard time leaving the house. I am going to try the tanning bed thing tomorrow.

Thanks for making me feel I am not alone with this condition.

I discovered a name for my winter doldrums a few years ago. After reading up on S.A.D., I purchased a couple of Verilux Happy Eyes lamps for my office. I also changed most of the light bulbs in my house to natural spectrum bulbs. Recently I bought a "Sunshine Simulator" from the same company. It seems to help. I don't feel as blah, bored, listless, restless, etc.

I don't feel like doing anything and don't look forward to anything. Anyone else have this condition? and if so what can be done about it besides heavy medications?
That problem is easy to solve, all you have to do is change your light bulbs.

"Full Spectrum Lighting" is what you need

ah, maybe those GE natural light bulbs that are advertised on TV all the time will help? I think I will open all the blinds during the day. I have tons of french doors so that will let some light in. Thing is I spend much more time outside in the winter. It's just too hot here in the summer. In the winter I like to take my laptop out to the pool patio and work there. Bad thing there is that I still have not gotten my pool screen replaced since Charley.

Thanks everyone for the ideas, I guess this depression is more common than I thought. That makes me feel better. So I'm gonna excersise more, who am I fooling? LOL. I am GOING TO START excersisiing. Get some natural light bulbs. Open the drapes and french doors, get some fresh air circulating in the house.
