Has anyone actually moved to Canada from the US?

I'm curious, has anyone actually made the move up north? What has your experience been like?

Are your taxes & living expenses higher or lower?

Are the chicks hotter up there?

And if so, what motivated you - politics, employment, love, marijuana?

It seems that everyone who says "I'm moving to Canada" is full of shit and too lazy to do anything.

All it takes is motivation from a Canadian woman

There are also a lot of areas up here that aren't unbearably cold in the winter. Like the south west.

I have lived both here and in Texas and from my point of view, though I'm not American, it is a bit difficult if you're from the south to be as social as you would normally expect. Canadians seem a lot more shy and aloof in comparison.

That's one major thing that I miss from my Texas experience. I miss being able to make friends with anyone anywhere or at least be noticed by someone somewhere! Here, it's a lot more difficult here (and I grew up here).
Sooooo if you're a social pussycat you may want to rethink or hope you already have a decent friend base up here before your move.

Are there any mailorder Canadian bride websites? You know, a site where I can browse a list of fine Canadian women and find one who wants to marry an Amercian?

Canadian women are generally stronger and more outspoken than American women.

I moved to Canada about 5 years ago (for totally non political reasons). I live in Montreal and find that day to day life is pretty much the same. Here are the differences as I see them:

- Taxes are higher.

- Weather is generally colder.

- More french is spoken.

- Less lawsuit crazy.

- Less sexually repressed.

- More culturally repressed (ie a certain amount of radio/tv programming must be "Canadian").

- Its common to vacation in Cuba.

- 5 channels of Curling.

- More hockey coverage.

- General disdain for American beers.

- Less Michael Moore, more Atom Egoyan

- Multiple political parties, although in practice its a one party system.

- More news stories of helicopter crases and faulty submarines.

- More marijauana.

- Generally safer, but more Biker wars.

- People don't make fun of rednecks, they make fun of Newfies.

- More secessionists (Quebec).

Interesting list, thanks

For the most part it seems that Canada is the California of North America, besides the weather and Spanish instead of French.

I went to Toronto and I couldn't believe how many homeless people there were. The cars there are also really shitty besides one neighborhood that seemed to be rich. If Canada is so great why are there so many disgusting homeless people everywhere begging for money? When it gets cold do they all die off or something?

Can't we all just get along?

I did, but not because of Bush. I moved here because my wife (a Canadian) is finishing up university and she has a really good job here as well.

She finishes this year and we were looking into moving back to the U.S. but now we are going to wait and see what Bush does in the U.S. before we go trotting back.

Taxes are WAY higher and expenses are WAY higher. Food cost a great deal more here than in the U.S. and you have very few choices as far as any commercial products. Electricty cost up the ass also. Out of the 30 most industralized nations in the world Canada rates 18th in taxes while the U.S. ranks 29th.

Now that the exchange rate is almost non-existent it is not as easy to live as it was just a year or so ago.

But I have to say, the immigration process is murder and very expensive. It is not easy to just pack your bags and move here. I do not want to become a permanent resident but I still have to go though all the hell of becoming one just so I can stay here with my wife.

If you are comfortable where you are, I'd say stay there, the grass is always greener on the otherside.

The girls here are not hotter than American girls thats a big myth.

Its not a bad place to be if you want to get away, but I perfer the U.S.

it depends where you moved from and where to. if you live in nyc and moved to nova scotia your living expenses and taxes would be a lot less.
