I think it starts at the fact that there is decided which party will set up the actual voting process.

I dunno but here in Europe there's always an independant commission that takes care of it, not the actaul competing parties themselves

Tip of the iceberg:

Santa Cruz, CA
"lost" registrations
I live in a very liberal area so the idea that my friend, Phil, wouldn't be able to vote didn't alarm me too much. Apparently, despite the fact that he filled out his registration and turned it in to one of those booths in front of the grocery stores weeks ago it didn't get turned in until after the deadline. However when I realized yet another friend of mine had a similar experience and also was not able to vote I began to get worried. Thankfully there are enough liberals left to fill in the gaps and Santa Cruz county (and the rest of CA) have gone for Kerry. This was still a very nerve wracking experience.

absentee ballot
I did'nt receive my absentee ballot in the mail. I'm 57 & this is the first time I have voted.

Beaverton, OR
duplicate ballot
I live in a state in which all votes are sent by mail, which seems to work out alright. I have a republican friend, however, who received two ballots one to her name and one to her name with a slight variation on the middle initial. While she was surprised, she said she'd been talked into reregistering for her same address while away at college last year. Suspicious? I'm left to cross my fingers and hope those vote counters are vigilant for duplicates.

Fullerton, CA
e-voting
I voted for the first time in my life today. My exhilaration was short-lived. My boyfriend had voted ealier in the day using a paper ballot, but I had to wait until after work to cast my vote. I was denied a paper ballot AT THAT SAME POLLING LOCATION even though a stack of about 300 blank ones were in plain view. The precinct officer claimed that those were for "emergencies." When I asked her to elaborate, she told me to just go use one of the eslate3000 voting machines manufactured by Harte-InterCivic, a known Republican campaign contributor. I told her I wanted a paper ballot, and she refused to give me one while I watched another individual fill one out. I felt queasy and decided to take down the serial number of my e-voting machine:

A03FFA

I pray that my vote actually makes a difference...

70 y/o mother never received ballot in mail... not allowed to vote in person
My mother is 70 years old and had applied for a ballot by mail. Well Today was election day and she never received the ballot. Regardless, she got in her car and drove to the polling location figuring she could just cast her vote in person. When she approached the volunteer at the desk she was told that she is on the roster to vote by mail and cannot vote there in person today, so she went home. She called me and I gave her the number for voting problems and she was instructed to go to Downtown Houston (mind you it was pouring rain today) and have herself "removed" from the vote by mail roster and get some sort of receipt and THEN she would be able to return to the poll location to cast her vote. Needless to say it was too much trouble for my 70 year old mother, who incidentally is a minority and a democrat. Go figure.
