Networking In An Office

We are going to be setting up a cubicle station.. What is the best way to network 4-6 computers together? Static or wireless?

If you can give me any details on a good network setup I would appreciate it greatly.. Thanks alot!

Static. Wireless is too flaky and unstable s till. That is my PERSONAL feeling anyways.

Just get a big hub and run off the same cable connection.

I have two 3com 1U 8 port hubs, a few routers, ISP will be Comcast.. May need to do some unique ips per station..

Running wires is not a problem but yes I want to keep the shit hidden under power strips or carpet... Or coming from the ceiling into the work stations...

I'm just not sure If I should buy a whole new setup or what...

All 4 comps may be networked into a major data storage comp as well for content management and access..

Not really nessicary I don't think. But if you plan on adding more machines down the road and adding people to your office, that never hurts to start now.
With 20+ employees you'll want something like that. Trust me!

Well this comp might have close to 1 terrabyte of data on it.. It's our central content database.. So I want everyone to have access to it at any given time to work on projects.. So I think it might be a must to put it in right away...

get a router and a patch panel it is easier that way, and you can grow it

We may also run a few task machines all the time all day long.. so those would be extra machines in addtion to the 4 cubed machines..

Start from scratch and do it right. Plan for growth and run the wire while you are at it. It takes as long to run one CAT5 as it does to run five.

Yeah I agree.. A spool of cat5 is spendy but its well worth it to run lines and plugs for future growth... We are going to start small and grow.. I have enough room potentially in this location we are getting to house about 10 employees.. If we need more then we will expand to another office.. but I am not in a rush to get to that level yet.. would rather have quality over quantity..

my thoughts: ditch the wireless idea.....you could do 54mbs with wireless but fuck that with large content files your dick will hurt (figure of speech)

take those 2 3com hubs sell them on ebay buy your self a nice little 24 port (expandibility) switch and mount it in a rack in a closet.

Take baddogs idea and go get your self a 12-24 port patch panel...Leviton makes really nice ones...

then a box of of cat 5 some surface mount 1 gang boxes and some leviton cat 5 jacks then start running cable. Depending on if its a drop ceiling or not get your self some 1 1/2 inch self adhesive track to run that cable in so it looks all pretty. you can probally pick that up at home depot.

Run all your cables back to that patch panel and start punching down. then get your self some little patch cables to run down into your switch.

run a patch cable out of your routers local net port down into your switch turn on dhcp and...

got your self a nice little 100mb lan

nice thing about that set up...all you need to do is just run a cable to another desk that you might need to put in place...run some molding crimp some ends and you got another station.

IF you didnt want to run all that cable you could just run one to a desk and put a little like 8port switch in place then plug patch cables into that from your computers. That might save ya some time.

I would place one of those wireless ap's on the network....turn off dhcp on it just in case you want to bring in a laptop to the office for some free dom.

i dont even know what i just tyrped...damn...i hope that makes sense
