starting a isp?
hey guys i was wondering what i'd have to get to start a dial up isp..this is gay but i could buy like 10 cable lines off my isp which can do 50k/s up, you could host 10 dial up lines off of 1 of these cable modems, charge the people $14.99x10 = $150 then u pay isp which is $40 for 1 line and then u got $100 profit off each 10 people u got, i am wondering how would i get access numbers and stuff and i would need a programmer that can make a program for it

There is no way to get dialup out of your cable modems...lol...its like getting blood out of butter. And even if you could, you think your cable company would let you host other people on your modems? I dont think so, they dont even like people hosting personal servers.
Your best bet is a T1 line which is around $700/month ------------------ Click Here to submit your gallery to the best TGP |

Don't go there either if you're gonna try to do some serious stuff.... I've got 5 domains here on this T1 and it's beginning to collapse from the traffic....
If you are serious about Hosting or becoming an ISP, take a look at www.host2own.com They've got a huge selection of packages and tools for this very thing. It won't be cheap, but it'll be done right. ------------------ ![]() OFF WITH THEIR HEADS! *ERASERCASH!!!* $35 BUCKS PER SIGNUP! *CASH IN ON YOUR TRAFFIC!* GammaCash |

The main problem you would have using DSL is cable modem bandwidth will be shared normaly at a contention ratio of 20:1 (20 cable modems to 1 upstream size) I.E. 20*256kbit connected to 1*256kbit upstream pipe so the datarate would be hosed for your customers.
ISP's normally buy clear 1:1 upstream feeds (more expensive than shared) Also, although you could run 10 normal phone lines, you need to run a server box with 10 normal modems hanging off it (how it used to be done before Lucent PM3's and Cisco RAS devices became availiable) or find an old USR total control that allow single lines to be connected . You won't give better than 33.6Kbit dialup (due to it taking signals at analog level, 56kbit needs digital connections) For that you need an access server like a Cisco AS5300 or Lucent PM3. You also need a radius server and scripts if you are going to be giving free webspace and stuff. It's a lot of work to earn a measely 20 buck fee compared to selling porn! KillerSoundz, i'm not overly familiar with the technology, but surely it can't be that easy? What about all the legal stuff, support, regulations (?) etc that would come along with it?
I'm sure you could find an existing ISP that will let you resell their service? Damn Elisha, you're a geek! Now, about setting up Excel Macros... ![]() Welcome to the boards girl ![]() Richard. |
