For anyone still experiencing Napster withdrawal...

...give WinMX a try. I downloaded it a few months ago back when Napster became useless, and it didn't work worth a crap. I couldn't find anything I wanted and I haven't used it since.

But I decided to fire it up again today, and it worked like a charm, just as good as Napster ever did. There seems to be enough people using it now that you can find just about any song.

Be cautious. Many of these file sharing programs come with spyware and/or adware that also gets installed if you aren't on guard, in many cases harming the workings of your computer and/or browser (IE).

KaZaA installs adware (TopText)
Audiogalaxy Satellite installs spyware (Webhancer)
Bearshare installs spyware
-- just to name a few exapmles (quoted from http://www.seethru.co.uk/zine/guides...apster_alt.htm )

""Audiogalaxy Satellite installs spyware (Webhancer)""

Ya but AudioGalaxy gives you an option to install webhancer or not, just chose "no".

Right on !! Morpheous kicks ass !!! It blows away all of the others, I've tried many of them, but none compare to Morpheous.

Bearshare and Limewire SUCK ! I tried both of them and it was very rare that a download actually was completed. Morpheous is as close to Napster as you can get. Give it a whirl !!

I've heard that several file sharing programs won't work unless you also install the spyware/adware it comes bundled with. It may not apply to the AudioGalaxy Satellite, but it has been reported (at download.com) that the second latest version of Kazaa won't work without TopText.

Those of you that have downloaded and installed many file sharing programs may consider running Ad-Aware on your system (get it from http://www.lavasoftusa.com/ )
Ad-Aware scans your computer for advertising systems and spyware, and gives you the possibility to remove them.

BearShare. It's free. It's simple. It gets me what I want. And does NOT put AdWare bullshit on your system.

But sharing of MP3 files with Kazaa is limited to files with a bitrate of 128kbit or less. If you want better quality you'll have to pay eventually (they are planning on implementing a pay system).

True, it's hypocritical. I don't really like these file sharing programs. They ain't no good for our industry. One of the best argument to make a surfer join a paysite--the access to lots of xxx videos--fails when you easily can get pornos thru Morfeus.

Actually, I am a member of the Columbia House Music Club and buy music CDs all the time. Over 300 at last count.

But sometimes I hear a song on the radio or in a bar and like to check out more of their songs before I make a purchase. I also live an hour drive down the highway from the nearest CD store and sometimes I like to make up a mixed CD before I go out on the weekend and I don't have time to go shopping.

Am I a thief? I guess so. Do I feel guilty? No. I've paid full price for more than my fair share of CD's with only one or two good songs on them. So I'll continue to use software like this to sample music and I'll also continue to make purchases when I hear stuff I like.

Most of the big file sharing companies out there have the same users sharing the same file. It's from a company called fastrack.

Something straight off their company page

"By using the FastTrack peer-to-peer products you achieve the fastest time-to-market in the next Internet happening - Peer-to-Peer. The FastTrack P2P Stack has been proven as the industry leader in distributed self-organizing peer-to-peer network technologies. Already now Grokster, MusicCity and KaZaA (The latter two are on top 10 on C|Net's Download.com) are licensing our technology. FastTrack P2P Stack is on it's way to become THE industry standard.

By using FastTrack peer-to-peer products you instantaneously tap in to a use base of over two million users. Each service provider using out technology can opt for interoperability with other networks using the same technology. The number of online users are between 250 000 and 450 000. The distributed network means that you can save costs for servers, which means that your server costs will not kill you as you scale up in the millions of users."

It's all good aslong as they dont install those gay adware crap.

Peace
