Mac or PC

If I was to get a new computer, should I get a PC or a Moc?

Also, with a Mac, what is a good one to go for?

Sometimes it helps to give details.

I want a machine to edit vids on only.

So what is best to do that, and what softwear and hardwear should I opt for?

How much money are you looking to spend?

If your budget is unlimited, a Power Mac G5 with Final Cut Pro would be a good choice.

A nice PC, however, will also do well, at a much lower price.

my partner got a Mac, paid tons of money, maybe $4k or something including a 23" LCD, but now he rarely uses it. He attached the monitor the PC and the mac is now in some corner.

If you're a pc user for long time, get a pc, at least you're used to the enviroment.

I'd suggest going the AMD 64 bit route. The AMD PCs now run much cooler than the latest Prescot pentiums which are running very very HOT!

Your best option now is to get:

- processor: 3800+ AMD 64bit Processor socket 939
- Motherboard, NForce4 or Nforce 3, Asus preferably or Soltek or Abit, maybe gigabyte
- ram: 1GB (2x512mb) or 2 GB (2x1GB) ram sticks, running at DDR500
- 2 x Wester Digital Raptors in Raid 0 ... they run at 10k rpm
- 1 x 400 GB sata HDD for storage and backup
- ATI 9800 pro graphic card
- good case, Chieftec Dragon Full Tower, with 500W good PSU, antec or enermax truepower
- 2 x 17" Samsung LCD displays with 12 or 16ms response time
- Miro Video video editing card
- 4 x 90mm fans for good cooling of the case

That's it, isn't cheap but it's fast as hell. It can beat just about anything you can find nowdays.

If you need help ordering the parts contact me. Using online vendors it's your best option:

Go for the PC man and make sure that you get as much ram as the system will hold since you are going the video route...

What he said.

I have 5 PCs and 3 Macs. Macs are much more expensive, but MUCH better machines (typing this on my PowerBook G4 actually).

If you want a kick ass machine buy this one . But it ain't cheap. Base price is $2,999 and you'll definitely want to add more memory, a bigger hard drive (you'll want more than 160GB if you're doing video) and likely a few more bells and whistles. It's liquid cooled, dual processor... the IDEAL machine for video.

But if you don't have the money for that plus Final Cut Pro and a decent monitor, I'd say go down and have a PC custom built.

Mac is elite.

I just bought a 20" imac after being on PC's for the last three years, and I just want to warn you:

They're great machines.

I edit in FC Pro and it's simply awesome.

HOWEVER, the LCD screens that the imac's use are very tiring on the eyes, unlike CRT"s, so keep that in mind if you buy an imac or the other luxe displays.
