I like the membership idea.

Post count idea is a bad one since it's zero guarantee of anything, in terms of capturing working webmasters. (Not to say there aren't working webmasters with high post counts - but it's an absolutely unreliable indicator).

Some of us come here primarily to search, not post = business to those who come here to promote their services.

Are we talking about a script upgrade and a quick reply feature ? :P

if I was gonna do it, I'd create 2 databases on the search server ... one with a crontab cleaner or somethin so i only shows the last 500,000 posts (or maybe even less) ...
Then have a "search all" checkbox to determine which one, default unchecked ... faster searches since most people dont need to search 1999's threads heh

What about changing the MySQL queries in search.php to ORDER BY date and then LIMIT to a reasonable number?

Lensman, don't be fooled by those who post crap non-stop like baddog. Board Whores should not be given search privileges over those who post less frequently. Quality posts are much more important than the ridiculous threads which appear here daily with no substance.

Every site worth a damn has a good search feature. GFY is way overdue for neglecting this part of the site.

Like I said in an earlier thread, Lens knows that the search function is vital to GFY and I wasn't worried that it would be gone forever.

I quoted MicroChick to say the same thing. Lensman isn't stupid and knows that there are alot of "Players" that don't have 15,000 + posts.

Not worried in the least about it. Although I DO like the paid membership Tiers-Free to post and view, pay for the priviledge to search. NOT pay PER search though. THAT would blow :winkwink:

Taboo, charging for the use of the search feature does not bother me all that much. Everyone is charging for something. I do hate to see the "free" use of so many sites be replaced by monthly fees. Hell, I am still stuck back in the 90's when Art Bell's archives were free, Napster was for everyone (free of charge), and developers were breaking down your door to offer you free usage of their latest programs without restrictions. Remember when Microsoft didn't charge for tech support?

I think though the "payers" should be given special privileges.

I would do a 17 gig scsi hardrive, with p4 Ht or dual Xeon. 1 Gig of ram should be fine but maybe 2 gigs if your drive is having problems.

Then connect to this server remotly for all your MySQL connections.

This will free up the main server which is hopfully a p4 HT or better with 2 gigs of ram for the search.

Ask yourself this question: What matters more to you...

...having the ability to SEARCH (fee or free)?
or worrying about what "idiots" (your term) are doing with their time?

My point is simply that I will use the "search" even if I have to pay for it. I would prefer to pay if that ensured reliability, availability, etc.

Here's another solution...

? Those who pay get unlimited searches (and possibly benefits, enhanced sigs, etc)
? Those who don't pay, get limited searches (i.e. 5 searches per day; no rollover)

No one has any room to complain.

If Lens is worried about people abusing Search, then require a random password for each query. You've all seen the sites that display a tiny graphic with text that can't be read by a script and must be manually entered. The people that need to search won't mind at all.

That's a great idea and makes perfect sense. It should be reciprocal... if I have someone on ignore, I can't post in their threads either. :)
