Lower the bar to 1200 intelligent posts. Not 10,000 worthless posts :Graucho
Even better, give access only to Veteran 2001-2002 members :banana |

Lens,
Simple solution that will probably get me flamed... Charge a membership fee for upgraded GFY VIP Membership that allows Search ability and possibly other future features (private areas, marketplace). But other perks don't matter, Search does. Perhaps $15-$25 a year. This will help alleviate the cost of maintaining gfy functionality and hiring more silicon valley techies. GFY would still function normally so people who don't pay won't notice a difference. The Search feature is a vital resource we'll all use everyday so I don't mind paying to make sure it always works. Other forums successfully charge membership fees, GFY should too. Plus all VIPs could get an exclusive sig / tagline that reads: "GFY VIP MEMBER" (obviously not important). You can give free memberships to people who have earned it (high or quality post counts) or deserve it. I'll be the first one to pay for it. If you decide to do it, please put all signups under my affliate id. :winkwink: |

Just wanted to add a big :thumbsup as it's sorely needed.
The x number of posts thing is a great idea too. It wouldn't even need to be high to keep the crap from eating up resources be it DOS attacks or bots. |
Nice! I can't wait to search for "party goat" every morning. :Graucho

That's good news:)
I am sure your tech has already read this, but it might give him some ideas to read what other large forum admins have done to deal with the search problem: http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthread.php?t=111239 The three things that come out of the discussion is: -Obviously, use a separate server to serve the search queries, and only synch that server once a day or every few days. This doesn't show the latest posts, but then again those posts are much easier to find by browsing the forum directly. -Use the fulltext search hack to get rid of the search tables created by vbulletin. -Disable the display results by thread, and only display results by posts. This allows you to get rid of all the table joins and makes everything much faster Some people in that discussion are running boards with 5 million or more posts as well, and they can bring valuable infos to your tech. |
Cool, and thanks for the work you put into GFY. :thumbsup There are those who do appreciate it.
