yeah i wouldn't go to bank if you had the cash , those exchange places gives you better rates not like "money mart or money tree " places but look for those tourists foreign exchange currency stores , instead of getting 1.246 you can get about 1.252 , bit more

beware some of places display high rates then charge you a fee which negates the deal you are getting

I find the best consistent rates are @ TD Canada trust, open a "borderless account"

Td canada trust is the freindly neighborhood bank of canada. Toronto atleast. They are everywhere and they are the most sane. CHARTER ONE BANK SUCKS Just for the record, they are charging me $35 every 4 days for an overdraft they created. They allow overdrafts to come into the account and then charge me fees and they won't let me take overdraft protection off

Royal Bank

Converting 1000.00 U.S. Dollars to Canadian Dollars will yield 1244.00 Canadian Dollars.
(Derived rate = 1.2440)

I usually just go to the bank. You could try the tourist exchange centers though, if memory serves me correctly the rate is a little bit better there.

I use Custom House. They guarantee they'll beat all 5 national banks on your exchange rates. Last time I exchanged $40k into Canadian, I did the math with Royal Bank and Custom House and I ended up saving nearly $200 US. Great company to deal with and they have offices in all major cities in Canada.

A borderless account is a good option. At TD right now, if you're selling, you'll get 1.2375 with a regular account, 1.2441 with a borderless.

I remember when i could take out $1000 USD get $1600 CND pay off my monthly bills and have spending money for the week.

Sadly, i am making more money now... which equals less money when you think about it...

God hates me... and it looks like the US is in big trouble with all the BS happening at home and over seas.

Its only gonna get worse. I wish they would just nuke everyone and get it over with. Ether that, or i have to move to Mexico.

I dont think id fit in there.

I think you have to sign up and be approved and stuff, like fax them over your id, etc. At least it was like that when they first introduced the program

For me, driving to one of those exchange places would actually cost me more in gas than i would get back from that 1% difference. If you're planning on exchanging large, like 5k+ banks will generally give you a slightly higher rate than their posted rates..Even at 5k you're only getting an extra $50 which isnt a whole lot.

I use both the TD Waterhouse account with the TD Canada Trust borderless acount and find that having the 2 works best. The TD Waterhouse account allows me to have US funds available on a debit card for when I'm in the states or making purchases online and need the funds to be US without converting and use TD Canada Trust for the rest making the conversion to canadian when needed. And you can have the funds transfered same day between the 2 accounts (Waterhouse and CT) with a phone call.
