For whatever it's worth, I was visiting a couple of friends in Vancouver a couple of years back.

We were shopping for dinner (yes, there are Safeways in Canada) and I spotted a man in a Firefighter's uniform. I thought nothing of talking to him about a t-shirt trade. We had a nice chat.

When I returned to my friends, they were AMAZED that I actually had the balls to actually walk up to, and speak with, a "government official" without being summoned. It seems that Canadians just don't do that kind of thing.

Me? I got a nice tour of the Firehouse and a station sweatshirt for my trouble...
