Serving images from a different server...your thoughts

This is for TGP owners, program owners, or anyone serving up many images.

For server speed reasons, I know many serve their images off a different server...and a lot of this comes from a different domain name instead of using clustered servers.

I know more and more people are installing apps like Norton Internet Suite, which blocks ads on websites (by defaults). This simply doesn't load any image coming from a different domain name. So nothing but the text and layout would load on the page.

Now...do you feel this is a real issue that needs to be addressed? Or not at a large enough scale to worry about?

what about creating a subdomain which redirects to the image server? or what about using just IP based linking?

I will have to see if Norton Internet suite also blocks subdomains or IP addresses. Not sure.

I'd say host on same domain, cluster... you have more control that way anyway, meaning that you don't have to monitor both sides for speed, just one, and upgrade accordingly.

im sure you can have subdomains, as a lot of places have multiple servers to handle the load and they are identified by xxx.domain.com etc

theres no way norton can block that, it would kill a lot of shit.

or you could get a loadbalancer, put the servers on a VLAN and youd be set with both servers being local to each other, and transfers between each other would not go over the internet and be more secure.

This is done all the time. Our tours are located on one server, and index pages and members on other servers. Sometimes we pull graphics from other servers.
