September 17, 2004

WASHINGTON -- Lynne Gobbell's decision to stand up for her political beliefs turned her life around in less than a week.

Last Thursday she was fired from her job at an Alabama insulation company for refusing to remove a John Kerry sticker from her car's windshield, and left with an uncertain future.

A few days -- and a couple of local newspaper articles later -- Gobbell found herself getting a job offer from Kerry himself.

When Gobbell, 41, returned to her Moulton, Ala., home early this week after a discouraging meeting with her former employer, she picked up the phone to hear Kerry's voice.

The Democratic presidential candidate introduced himself, said Gobbell, and told her he regretted what had happened to her. "He said he was proud of me for standing up for what I believed in," she said.

Near the end of their short conversation, Gobbell said Kerry told her, "You let him know you work for John Kerry. You're hired."

Kerry was referring to Phil Geddes, the CEO of Enviromate, a Moulton company where Gobbell had been hired as a production line worker two years ago. Geddes reportedly told Gobbell she could choose to work for his company or for Kerry when she declined to remove a Kerry insignia from her car.

Chad Clanton, a Kerry campaign spokesman, said the Massachusetts senator read about the episode in an Alabama newspaper before reaching out to Gobbell.

Gobbell said she was approached by a plant manager, on behalf of Geddes, and told she had to remove the Kerry-Edwards campaign sticker on the rear of her Chevrolet Lumina, or she would be fired.

"I told him that Phil couldn't tell me who to vote for," she said.

Gobbell said she then went to see Geddes at this office and confronted him about the situation. "I own this place," she said he replied, and told her to "get out."

Unsure what he meant, Gobbell asked her boss whether she was fired, to which he replied "I'm thinking about it ... get out and shut the door," Gobbell said.

Moments later, a plant manager informed her she had been fired.

Geddes was not available for comment yesterday.

When asked about firing an employee for displaying a political decal, Frederick Schauer, a Harvard professor and First Amendment expert, said "As a non-government job, the First Amendment in the strict sense does not apply."

A week before she was fired, said Gobbell, Geddes had attached a letter to employees' paychecks extolling the benefits of the Bush administration's tax policies.

As news of the incident spread this week, Gobbell said she received phone calls with offers of financial support from different parts of the world.

She said the Kerry campaign offered her the same salary she received through Enviromate, plus health benefits, something she did not have. Asked about her future duties, she said she "will be answering phones and spreading the news about John Kerry. There might be a little travel later on."

Obviously, no example are available of the reverse situation....

Any other KKK member here ????

Oh, BTW, another Bush flip-flop:

Quote:
Bush Unveils Intel Plan, Falls Short of 9/11 Panel

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Bush (news - web sites), who had promised to give a new national intelligence director "full budgetary authority," submitted a plan to the U.S. Congress on Thursday that stopped short of giving the director all of the powers sought by the Sept. 11 commission, documents show.

In a rare move, Bush submitted his own legislation to key congressional committees that would ensure that the Defense Secretary continues to play a substantial role in the intelligence budget process.

Under Bush's proposal, a copy of which was obtained by Reuters, the national intelligence director would "develop and determine" the annual consolidated budget for the National Foreign Intelligence Program, which constitutes more than half of the $40 billion intelligence budget.

But the White House says the intelligence director would do so based on the budget proposals of the individual intelligence agencies, and after obtaining the advice of the Defense Secretary and other members of Bush's Cabinet.

Probably will say in partisan speaches that he " feels" for the victims family and gave full power to ...

crap...

And BTW, I dislike Kerry more and more as times go by... No fucking balls!

I realize it is a link to the enquirer, but these same people were on other news stations this week. This was just the first link I found that had the story online.

I personally don't think they should have asked for the sigh to come down... but on the other hand I lived in a condo ( regulated by co-owners with by-laws) and it was a dictature ( I sold my unit).

On the other hand, we see that here we are talking about ALL signs, except real estates or approved by the association ( maybe a lost cat sign ...).

In the case of this worker , I ask you:

If the sticker would have been a " Four More Years" one, would the owner/employer still asked it to be romoved ????

I seriously doubt it...

I definitely don't think this woman should have lost her job. The guy who fired her is an absolute dickhead.

My only point in giving the link I gave was to show that this shit goes both ways. It is not a Republican thing, and not a Democrat thing. It is an asshole thing.

This has nothing to do with the topic at hand, so how about giving this story its own thread?

First Amendment may not fly on this one, but since when can one be fired for supporting a certain candidate?

Why do people always bring up the 1st Amendment in cases like this? The 1st amendment states

Quote:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
HER RIGHTS WERE NOT VIOLATED!!

Yes, the guy that fired her was a total asshole. She should not be fired for something so stupid. BUT, it is his company, and he should have the right to hire, or fire any damn body he wants to. He did not take away her right to voice her opinion, he just didn't let her do it on HIS PROPERTY!

I don't think what this guy did was right by any means, but it has NOTHING to do with the 1st amendment. That was my point.

Personally, I think someone who OWNS their own company should be able to fire anybody for any reason they want. It is their company! They shouldn't HAVE to hire women, men, blondes, redheads, or anybody else they don't want to.

fucking insane.

a person should only be fired if they are doing a shit job or causing problems with other employees and/or customers.

unless there is something the news isnt telling us (which there may be) all she did was have a sticker on her car.

So, you would hire sexped if he did his job, and was nice to the customers? Why should the govt. be able to tell YOU who YOU have to hire at YOUR company?

nope. trust me i see your point 100%. and i understand the law. i dont think there is really any way for anyone to win this situation.

altho i think theres a huge difference in hiring a known pedophile who goes about talking & annoying the shit out of everyone... and a lady with a political bumper sticker.

There may be a difference, but it's still the same thing.

I think everyone probably agrees that it was a shitty thing to do. I don't understand why you would say "Only in America".

I am just curious why people mention the 1st amendment in situations like this?? Can anyone explain that to me?

The US have changed so much in the last few years ( OK, here goes the 9/11 justification... similar to the holocaust one).
Country is divided, raped by politicians and robbed by CEO...

Too bad,

i assumed that freedom of speech extended to bumper stickers on a persons car. i guess only employer approved stickers are legal.

See, that's my point. NOBODY took away her freedom of speech. She still has it. He
only took away her ABILITY to express it on HIS PROPERTY.

What bothers me most about this thread is that the shithead Republicans on this board actually believe it is ok to fire somebody because of who they are voting for.

Anybody who believes this woman was treated fairly is a fucking prick to the bone and only justifies my hatred for these people.

I'm a noob Democrat for this election, but have been voting since 1980. Tired of the lies, the bullshit, and the deficit. Tired of having my constitutional rights taken away, and I got VERY serious about THAT situation. I've currently got 14 web sites running for various Democratic candidates, local, state, senate, congressional, and you can bet your ass for John Kerry/John Edwards!!!

When not doing these sites or my adult site adventures, I work a day job for a defense contractor. I do advanced avionics and guidance systems design and engineering. I've successfully turned more than a few thousand disgruntled Republicans to voters for John Kerry. I've also started up a number of grass-roots organizations in multiple states that now have close to 7,500 volunteers working for Kerry/Edwards.

I've caught a LOT of shit during the day job because of this. But, thanks to an in depth knowledge of the law, there have been NO attempts from any employer against me. And rightfully so.

bullshit. has nothing to do with his property. he didnt tell her to park elsewhere, he told her to remove it from her car. huge difference. he specifically said she could not endorse kerry if she wanted to work there.

Why do you assume that everyone who doesn't agree with you is Republican? Why is it her RIGHT to work anywhere she wants? Why isn't it a business owners right to fire anybody he wants? I don't think anyone in this thread said the guy was their hero. We are just defending his right to run his company any way he chooses.

I am sure he would have settled for her not bringing her car onto his property with the sticker on it. Seriously, if he wanted to walk around his property and not see that bumper sticker, then that is his right.

BTW, Dawgy is a fucktard.

I just wanted to throw that in there, because I think on GFY, if you disagree with someone you have to call them a childish name or you get banned.

J/K Dawgy. I actually enjoy a nice heated debate where people can voice their opinions in a mature manner.
