I don't beleive it ... a 3d program maybe but I really don't see how you could make something like that in illustrator

Still looking at it and I cannot see how he done it totally in illustrator ... lots of gradian mesh was used for sure but I cannot figure out some of the stuff

At first glance looks like a photo... have to look carefully to notice that it's just a little 'too perfect'.

Vector tracing. It "traces" a photo or other image and converts it to a vector image with paths
