Megs of ram needed for a dedicated server..

How much ram should I have in my dedicated server in order for it to not run out of memory.

Getting on average about 60-80k hits a day and doing maybe 200 gigs of transfer a month. Not sure how much exactly.

It is a pentium 3 800mhz
unix and currently have 256 megs of ram.

Thanks for the help.

You definetely have enough beef in that server to handle such traffic. Don't forget to turn needless services off so they don't hog resources.

Thanks for bringing it back up tit. I have asked the host how much to upgrade the ram. Since I only have 1 small cgi program running (autogallery pro) I know the resources should not be taxed that much. The problem I have had is when I get a listing on the hun or worldsex or al4a it crashes

When I was on the old virtual host I had a capped line so I posted movies all the time. Never had downtime because of a listing with 1 of those guys. It just slowed the transfer down.

And now on this dedicated, I have a box that I pay for 300gigs of transfer whether I use it or not. Always seems to go down on big listings... SHIT! Guess I Figured out how they work... Say 1 thing, have them pay for it, and then dont deliver... No wonder the only times I have had downtime lately is when I get a listing with 1 of the big TGP's...

You might be having some hardware problems if your system is crashing with a rush of hits. We have customers that do 20GB a day with around 1 million hits on a PIII 500 with 256Mb ram, and have no problems with say a listing on the Hun. So adding ram will probably not help The other thing that might be the problem is how is your provider capping your traffic ?? Are they using a mod that is built into apache or are they doing it at the router ?? If they are using apache to throttle it down then there is your problem, apache sucks when it comes to capping your traffic, and it will die off if you try to run say 1Gb a days worth of traffic thru a 1/2GB a day cap.

How much ram is being used on your system right now ?? One way to tell is to telnet/ssh into the system and at the prompt type in free. It will look something like this.

total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 776652 671852 104800 37272 129288 508304
-/+ buffers/cache: 34260 742392
Swap: 2104432 1936 2102496

This will tell you how much of your disk swap is being used, and that is where your system will really start to thrash if your are hitting it all the time.

Geez - why the worries ?

RAM is so cheap, you can smack 2 gigs in the server without sweating !
