CBS News has documents, memos, from Bush's commander in the National Guard in which he sat out the Vietnam war which say Bush Jr. shirked his responsibilities and used his father's political influence.

the controversy is over the authenticity of the memos, the Republicans are saying they are fakes. CBS stands by their authenticity.

The new papers may or may not be fakes but the fact remains:

Bush did shirk his responsibilities, or as the military calls it went AWOL, when he was in the National Guard.

People did him favors to get in the National Guard when others were more qualified.

He did not perform his duties when the country was at a time of war.

Those new papers, even if real, added nothing to what was already known.

You know what is "funny", is that a lot of the people bashing Bush for his military record, are the same people that said they would move to Canada, or wherever, if there was a draft.

Fucking hypocrits.

I'm not defending Bush, but I'm certainly not going to call someone that spent 40 some odd days in Vietnam and recommended himself for medals, only to throw them in the dirt, (then later pick them up, polish them and have them vacuum sealed for use during his future political career) a hero neither.

I don't recall anyone saying that Kerry is a "hero" but he did go to war for his country and got shot at and his opponents did not.

Your upset that Kerry volunteered to fight in a war for his country.

When he found out if was a bunch of bullshit he became disillusioned with the war and the government leaders that were leading it.

When he returned to tried to get us out of a stupid war.

Now he is running for president and is proud of his service but not necessarily the war in which he fought.

So what is the problem?

I never said anything about his length of service, just his time in Vietnam. And it wasn't a lie, I was recalling from my memory, which, if wrong, was wrong. Just like most of your assumptions. Regardless, there is little difference between 1 1/2 months and 4 months.

Wait, He became disillusioned? So he IS wrong? I think what you meant is that he changed his feelings / opionions of the war. That is fine, I can respect that. But to this day he flip flops more than the stations on my TV during football games on Sunday.

My problem was with the hypocriscy of people slamming Bush for his military service when they themselves stated they would run if there was a draft. If you haven't, then this thread wasn't even meant for you.

I haven't stayed abreast of this news. It's pretty irrelevant whether the memos are real or fake.

Kerry went oversease, fought, risked being killed in gun battle.

Bush stayed home, safe, and comfortable.

That's all that matters with respect to each of their service to their country during Vietnam.

In the old days one of them would be called a man, the other, a mouse.
