What do you do during a hurricane?

I've never been in one. What goes on? What happens? What do you do?

During tornado warnings we would just hang out in the baseman or be fairly close to a basement. Hurricanes are on a much larger scale though. What do you do?

you watch out for falling trees and sometimes you go outside to see how windy it is.

Depends on if you have power or not.

For Frances we lucked out and did not lose power - so I worked, surfed, played madden 2005, watched movies, etc.

Without power things become difficult.

I have a generator in New Orleans, I need to get it to Tampa.

Growing up in FL, most of the time you do nothing.

If a big one's getting ready to hit, you tape up or put plywood or metal on the windows so the glass doesn't break. You do what you can for outside object - chairs, tables, etc. are brought in. Boats are tied up and anchored or brought out of the water. You make sure you have enough fresh water for everyone for 4 days (a gallon a person a day). Also fill the tubs up with water as you can use this for toilets if your public (or well) water supply is cut off. Get food that won't have to be refridgerated and hold on

you become hysterical and run around screaming.

must be really scary though. Knowing that you might lose your house, your family photos and memories in less than 2 minutes.

you hide under as much dirt as possible. in 1990, or whenever andrew was, we hid in ammo bunkers in the air force when they evacuated the whole base. when we came out, all the aircraft that they didnt have time to fly out were gone. strewn about and broken into little tiny 23 million dollar pieces.

Mike, let us know when you get that generator here : )

This last hurricane I got all the preparations done and then we partied Fri and Sat and then come Sun it was time to get serious. The party ususally ends about the time something breaks, gets destroyed, or your power goes off.

Seriously, i am scared to death right now of Ivan. Going home to finish the yard clean up and get the windows boarded up.

Best wishes to all in the path!

As far as I can tell, most of the time (after you have made all your preperations), you sit in the cave that your place becomes, (since all the windows are shutterred and boarded), you eat, and you sleep, and you eat and you sleep....

Pretty much everybody I know gained about 3 to 5 pounds during Frances.

And while you do that, you hold tight and hold your place doesn't get wasted.

Take care. You can always go to Candids office - I am sure you guys are set over there with generators and such.

I WAS in FL

Grew up in Jacksonville which is really kinda South GA, but we still had some brushes with the 'canes while living there and vacationing. Also some Noreaster storms vacationing at the Outer Banks. I have to admit, I love storms

I remember visiting grandparents down there during Dora. They lived on the river and from what I remember, it came UP the river. We were there with Camille and for some reason I remember it giving up some bad weather too. I'm aging myself......

Absolutely! If my power goes down again I am loading up the family and the dogs and heading down here. We have a couple wide open spaces in the building that will make for great camping!

It basically sounds like a 747 jet engine on takeoff is right outside your window.

Your windows vibrate continuously like a looped mp3 track that goes on and on and quickly gets on your nerves to change the beat.

You see things blowing across the sky like in the Wizard of Oz.

You watch big trees bend over and pull out of the ground like they are twigs.

You see the sky light up this very eerie green glow when power sub-stations transformers blow.

If you walk outside it feels like you are driving in a Ferrari at full speed without a windshield.
