Breaking News: More Than 200 Killed in Hostage Crisis

Twenty hostage-takers reported killed

BESLAN, Russia (CNN) -- Hundreds of people held hostage at a school in southern Russia fled to safety Friday, but scores are reported dead as pitched battles continue between troops and hostage-takers.

Reports said the hostages may have numbered as many as 1,200 and that 70 percent of them were children.

It was not clear whether several children and others, who were being held by a remnant of the hostage-taker hours after the school was stormed, were still in captivity.

Several of the hostage-takers fled following the raid. However, there are some reports that many of the suspects may have changed out of their militants gear into civilian clothing, further complicating Russian forces' efforts to hunt them down.

SWAT? or your mean Russian Forces, and the Raid was not planned but the troops had been ready for a long siege.

Children who survived said they were denied food and water and had to take off their clothes because of the heat. Some boys said that because they had no water, they had to drink their own urine.

For you, it's fine for the Russians to occupy Chechenia and slaughter hundreds of thousands of civilians in there. But the moment a Chechen starts thinking about terrorism, it suddenly becomes there fault?

You've got a point, but in no sense can terrorism like this be justified.

Bullshit, Chechenia is a part of Russia at least 300 years.
War started at 1992.

No, it's not, they're criminals but I certainly expect people who grow up under an occupation between the daily kidnappings and ethnic cleansing to be not-so-sane. The fact that Russian soldiers are way underpaid doesn't help matters at all.

The cycle needs to be broken. The terrorists should be stopped and the Chechen civilians have to be seen as partners rather than enemies.

1992, after the collaps of the Soviet Union, Chechenia wanted to be more independant but Russia refused and it goes on and on like that.

So for you its ok for USA to occupy Iraq and slaughter hundreds of thousands of civilians there? And did you see how Russians occupied and slaughtered civilians? So where are the thousands of bodies? Where are the proofs of your bullshit?

Do you know how many Russians did chechens slaughter in 90-99? Do you know with your brainwashed head whom in 99 did chechen army attack? Do you know how many billions of dollars Russia spent since 1994 to build houses, schools etc. in Chechnya and provide them with food? Do you know how many mines did that civilians land under cover of night?

I quietly wait anxiously, until the day (and right now it looks like soon) that the Russian government openly admits they are at war with Muslim extremists, and join the US, for one motherfucker of a team, to battle these scum and wipe them off the face of this earth.

Terrorist symphathizers and appeasers (and also people who will respond with "But George Bush kills babies with bombs") please respond with your predictable cute comments below :-)

Do you have a clue that you are talking absolute bullshit? Stalin deported chechens not in 1936, but in 1944, and do you ever have a clue why? Becouse they were supporting Hitler, and were fighting with nazis against red army.

in 1996 Chechnya got total independent, do you have a clue what happened next?

No it's not, but what the US is doing in Iraq doesn't even compare to what's being done to Chechens. Actually Bush himself used to talk, during his presidential campaign, about the atrocities committed by Russia against the Chechens.

Is that why the unemployment level is at 76%?
All I'm saying is that many Chechens have become criminals and Russia certainly has something to do with it.

Genocide Watch info.

The killings and the abuses need to be stopped from both sides, otherwise it ain't gonna work.

Yeah, a terrorist attack occured in 1999. The terrorists wheren't just gonna disappear like that. The terrorists after all the despicable things they do, don't become suddenly all peacefull just because a treaty is signed. It's too late for them, they need to be hunted down and taken out without disturbing the peace process so that future generations won't be attracted into terrorism.

I'm just trying to figure out an actual solution. why the anger?

What the Iraq is doing to US doesnt even compare what is Chechnya doing to Russia. Remeber that. We dont kill chechen civilians becouse of our free will. We are defending our country how we can and with the money we have. They are started war against us. And no fucking american propaganda will stop us from doing that. We are not going to sit and see how they are blasting us in our houses.

But it's not Chechenya that took over your country. You're the ones who took over Chechenya.

So what are you going to do? Keep killing more of them and them killing more of you? Kill the terrorists but don't go thinking that all the Chechens are enemies that need to be killed.

You also have underpaid soldiers who sell weapons to the terrorists. A solution to this would be more than welcome, or else the terrorists will hit you harder and harder everytime.

Talking about an ordinary american propaganda about chechen genocide really makes me angry. Do you know what they were doing through that 3 years and what size of army did they have? There were evil chaos in Checnya. There was one of the biggest terrorist camp in the world. We were doing what we could with our army, resources and money. But its really funny to hear american comments about violence, when you bombarded civilians cities of Iraq and Serbia, countries that did nothing to you. I imagine what would you do if that countries sent troops in US? Hiroshima?

We didnt take anyone. Chechnya is a part of Russia. 1st of all if someone is attacking us and planning terracts, no doubts we will keep killing them. We are living in law in Russia, same as lawful chechen people. We are not killing them, they are supporting us in killing bandits and arab mercenaries. In the school terrorists havnt killed us, they just killed ossetin and chechen children there, did you know that?

You seem like a smart guy. At least you give good arguments.

Yeah that's what I'm saying, take the terrorists out but it's not a good idea to oppress all Chechens because of the terrorists.
For instance, here's what I see in documentaries about Chechenya. I see Chechens dancing around happily everytime they get to work because they arrived safely. I see some Chechen getting kidnapped by Russian soldiers who ask for a ransom from his family. I see mercenaries patrolling the streets of Chechenya and so on. Is what I'm seeing wrong?

And no, I'm not from the US.

Russian soldiers kidnapping chechens are the same bandits as chechen terrorists. If they were caught they would be jailed. Of course there are still criminals in the goverment, but the criminal is not our law, instead of terrorists. What mercs are you talking i dont know, the streets are patrolling by russian soldiers, who are died everyday there, defending chechen people from terrorists. Didnt you think what are they dying there for?

so far this is the worst hostage situation that i heard of that caused the life of too many innocent civilians.

i partly blame the authorities in-charge for they allow such thing to happen. they could have prevented this deaths.

Children who survived said they were denied food and water and had to take off their clothes because of the heat. Some boys said that because they had no water, they had to drink their own urine.
I think he is talking about both SWAT and simple soldiers. All of them did everything they can. Lots of them were killed saving kids. One SWAT officer from elite Alfa team was shot in back when he was carrying 2 children in his hands. He is dead, but fortunately the kids are survived. Another Alfa soldier has been shot in head also while hi carried out a kid. The last time I heard about that man he was still alive but he was placed into reanimation... Damn, these men are heroes. Whey didn't plan to storm when terrorists blasted one of their bombs in the school.

Please don't mix these things. It's like we'll try to justify terrorist attacks in Iraqi and Afghanistan. I.e. if I just replace a few words in your post to make it look as follows: "For you, it's fine for the Americans to occupy Iraq (Afghanistan) and slaughter hundreds of thousands of civilians in there. But the moment an Iraqi (Afghan) starts thinking about terrorism, it suddenly becomes there fault?"

running thorugh emotions when i did that.. anyways, its just so pity in so many places, why in the hell they choose a school. these are damn fucking kids who have lived mostly their lives in the playground.

this is why i say there is so much violence the world we lived in today.

still, the victims families will surely cry for justice and the fact that from all the hostages takers, only 3 are left, can we still say justice can be served to all the 300+ who lost there lives just because of a political war...

RIP
