Estimate of hostage figure raised now to 1,000 or even 1,500, including hundreds of children some as young as 7. Early Friday, heavily armed hostage-takers sent demands to Putin through negotiator, former president of neighboring Ingushetia Ruslan Aushev. Sporadic fire and explosions heard during night.

The demands relayed yesterday ... were that Chechnya must be an independent state, and that Chechnya must be outside Russia.

If that happened, Chechnya would end up being another Afghanastan, a Taliban style radical Islamic state, a breeding ground for terrorists. Russia can't let that happen, nor can the world. Unfortunately, it means that those children will probably be slaughtered in the name of Allah. Radical Islam is a cancer that must be stomped out completely.
