THE CORPORATE CHALLENGE OF SUSTAINABILITY

In my position as managing director of an internationally expanding company, I have come to consider sustainibility as our greatest corporate challenge. Being aware of the necessity of making our economic objectives balance with available natural resources and the health of the ecosystem can cause moral conflicts for me as far as the objectives of our company are concerned. This is especially the case when oppurunities for corporate growth conflict with our company?s objective to be sustainable in the year 2005.
To balance the effects of our company?s consumption of fossil fuels, approximately 5000 hecters of newly planted or protected trees could compensate in terms of acting as a sink for carbon dioxide emmisions. Under normal trading circumstances, it is financially feasible for our company support this level of afforestation, and we are working towards this goal. At the moment we have planted, or are protecting, approximately 3000 hectares of tree. Given that forests have many more functions than just absorbing carbon dioxide, we believe that, in this way, our company is at least able to compensate for any damage we inlict on the enviroment worldwide. Tree planting may not be the ultimate solution to excess carbon dioxide emissions for the world economy, but for the time being this is a good approach, given that evry tear a staggering amount of forest dissapears.
We are also lokking for energy savings in new factory constructions. For example, on our new building in China, we have ensured that the roof faces the sun to achieve optimum benefit from solar gain and solar panels. Depending upon the location, wind energy can also be cost-effective.

At each plant location we strive to define the optimum in order to achieve sustainability. The mix of sollutions ranges from cost-effective measures to expensive technology such as photovoltaic panels. Everything on location which contributes to the realisation of our sustainability objectives muct be utilised. A long-term investment programme leading towards sustainability and reduced energy and materials consumption is drawn up in which, in generally, the most effective enviromental investments come first.
