problem with Win2K

again, got another annoying problem... dunno if it's cuz of service pack two or what..
anyhow..

here... sometimes, on the desktop, when I put something, I have to REFRESH the desktop to see it... it never happenned before

also, on the explorer, when I look at some directory that have sub directories, the little + sign disapears, and I can't no longer collapse/retract that tree... and when I refresh through the edit/refresh option in the menus, or hit F5, it does not refresh the folder (with the folder trees) part..

any ideas?

I've had the refresh thing in Win 98 before. Usually after scandisk and reboot - maybe defrag too, it works fine.

If rebooting fixes your problem everytime then you most likely have a memory leak. Make sure you have enough ram, 64mb minimum, 128 recommended, and that your memory is good. You might want to check and see what programs are running in the background when this problem occurs.
I always get this after burning disks or running large applications. Win2k may manage memory best but it isn't perfect. Leaks happen.

I know! There's a reason Win2k supports up to 4 gigs of ram...

so you're telling me I should buy another 256 chip? I got 256 now, running it at 133mhz....

uhm, seems strange... got 128 meg free as it tells me almost all the time..

it seems to happen every time it automatically collapse... you know, when you leave the mouse a bit over it.. anyways...

I doubt it's the mem, but it "could" be...

It's the x86 architectural addressing limit you know... 2^32 = 4 294 967 296 , your cheap PC board does not support that much ram anyways.

Compare this to 64 bits CPU who can do 2^64 = 18 446 744 073 709 551 616

wiZd0m, just making fun of the Windows family. I tend to do that when I'm studying for a particular exam. I got the Win2k pro inst & config exam coming up in August so I will probably get a little more bitter about the whole MS thing until that's over.
Nice to see somebody knows how memory is calculated. I get too many blank stares when I go to buy parts these days...
Besides, how did you know my pc board was cheap?

Yeah, I know, I have all the OS near me on multiple partitions around me and computers, I remember when the NT mentality was to bild around "DOMAIN" and now that companies actually adopted that paradigm, now, you have to throw all this out to move to "Avtive Directories", Funny shit

I just downloaded Solaris8 and I was reading Sun Microsystem License, really funny stuff in there, At least I don't have to pay anything until I run a 8-Way Systems Star Office is great, and the Browser is fucking fast.

magnatique, you have more than enough ram so you don't need to buy more. I don't know what the problem is off-hand so I will consult a more experienced tech later today.

actually, I noticed it does it ALL THE TIME whenever I am moving/copying something and I drag and leave the cursor onto the directory so it collapses...
