rickholio,

Great read, thanks for sharing.
No problem bud. Juan is probably the best single source of information about politics in the near and middle east. The blogger himself is routinely called upon by CNN, MSNBC, and various congressional and senatorial investigations panel to give expert testimony.

I don't always necessarily agree with his conclusions or speculations, but he's always well researched and well reasoned. If only we were so lucky to have journalists and elected representatives that did the same.

Saddam Hussein gradually increased his power in the Ba'ath Party and when Ahmad Hasan al-Bakr retired in July 1979, he became the new president. In the next few months Saddam Hussein swiftly executed his political rivals. Increasing oil revenues allowed him to increase spending on the building of schools, hospitals and clinics. He also established a literacy project that won him a Unesco award.

Another important reform was a massive programme to bring electricity to Iraq. This was followed by a huge nationwide distribution of free fridges and television sets. He also improved the status of women and by the late 1970s they were a major part of the workforce.
This was someone working to civilize these people, whether they wanted it or not. He knew who he was dealing with, ignorant religious masses, and he wanted to transform them into a secular society.

Quote:
As vice chairman, he oversaw the nationalization of the oil industry and advocated a national infrastructure campaign that built roads, schools and hospitals. The once illiterate Saddam, ordered a mandatory literacy program. Those who did not participate risked three years in jail, but hundreds of thousands learned to read. Iraq, at this time, created one of the best public-health systems in the Middle East -- a feat that earned Saddam an award from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization.

But we got rid of the secular Saddam...
- a man who embraced western culture

- a man who fought against Iran and Islamic fundamentalists
- demonized for killing the same types of people we're killing now
- someone with nothing to gain from another fight with the USA

GW Bush makes vague allusions that these two ideological enemys are somehow working together? WTF! ... completely absurd ... but americans are too poorly educated to understand why that's a ridiculous premise.

With Saddam gone, the extremely religious majority of the population in Iraq are now "free" . . . . free to set up their own Islamic State. (Saddam was the only obstacle to this) "Democracy" in Iraq means another nation of religious nuts voting their even more insane religious leaders into power. When a citizenship is culturally ready for real freedom, they'll have their own revolution (like we did).

Who really has the power in Iraq is perfectly demonstrated by the Al-Sadr standoff in Najaf. The BS puppet Iraq government can't do anything about it - but as soon as the Holiest Of Holy Cleric tells them to cease fire, everyone obeys. Al-Sadr and/or his nominees will be appointed upon the first election and then Iraq will belong to Islam. Iraq will ally with Iran and be protected by Irans shiny new nukes. Iran in exchange for protection and/or proliferation of WMD then gains control of Iraqs oil reserves.

This is the legacy of George W Bush.
Treason? I think so.
Bad news for America? absolutely.

Knocking down the WTC was NOT Osamas goal.
It was simply a tactic. And thanks to GW, he won the game.
Osama says thank you, and "four more years".
Excellent post great points

You do realize that this aircraft is not a gunship, but rather an AC-130 "Hercules" heavy transport launching flares used to keep it from getting shot down by, for instance, shoulder launched stinger missiles?

An enemy seeing that would probably be trying to run TOWARDS it in the hopes of shooting it down and scavenging whatever came out of it (or shooting it, if it was used for troop transport) than running away from it.

Perhaps you should get more informed before you display your jingoism so blatently.
