Here is the latest.
Spoke to a biologist from Fish and Game, She said I moved into the bear habitat so I will have to get used to them. They have nothing on record of them hurting anyone or breaking into homes. She said instead of behind quiet when the bear comes around, that I should make some noise to scare him away. She even said I should go by those loud noise maker blowers just to let the bear know that the house is not a quiet hangout and not to get used to hanging out with humans. As someone else here always said, she said if this doesn't work I should think about the electrical fence around the property line. Thanks for all your help, seems like there are some smart people on this board. ![]()

Are you way out there in the sticks? Chances are Fish and Game/Animal Contol won't help you. They consider the bear to be home and you are in THEIR space if you are way out of city limits.
Can you build a fence? If not, keep your dogs close and supervised at all times. Don't let them out at dusk or after dark. Other advice is good to remove food sources and in general make the place uncomfortable for him. Put out wind chimes that make noise. I know for deer you can put down chicken wire where they walk onto the property because they don't like to cross it. Don't know if that works for bear though. ![]() Your best choice is to talk to your neighbors and see how they deal with the bear in their yards. We had one in the neighborhood a couple months ago. It swam over to our island and hung out for a week or so. We never saw it in our yard, but I saw poop down by the street one morning. ![]()

Oops.. didn't see page 2.
![]() ![]() You don't need those noisy horn things. Just bang two pot lids together and yell. My husband does this great Howard Dean-esque screech that scares bears away when we're camping and they come poking around. Seriously though.. watch your dogs!!! They will be a Smokey Snack if you're not careful. Just let the bear know that your house isn't a fun place to be and he'll leave you alone. But you might find him in your pool one day. Just make noise and he'll leave. Or put in one of those continuous pool skimmer things and that will keep animals out of the water. (BTW, this is Sonya. Hi Dave! You know you could come by and say hi to everone at TLA's board now and then too. ![]()

correct, but dave trying to coax the bear into letting him put one on him popped into my head and that was good for a laugh. You probably have to put up a fence around your pool anyway, unless your neighborhood has no types of ordinances at all about things like that. Noise should work, bears are generally "peaceful" animals if they are not protecting cubs and scare easy other than that. Maybe a can of "Bear-B-Gone" (I made that up btw)

when I was a kid we lived way up in the woods and had bears in the yard 2-3 times a month. My mom got one of those portable airhorn things and that would chase it away.
The bear isn't really a threat to you. If it wanted a piece of you it would have already tried to take it. Just make some noise or put up an electric fence and he will move on. like others said, don't be surprised if you put in a pool and come home to find him in it from time to time. But a little noise and it should get out of there and move on to a more quiet neighbor ![]() also, like eveyone said watch your dogs. We had two dogs that were big ( a husky and a great dane ) and the bears never messed with them but a guy that lived down the street had a little pug that just disappeared one day. probably bear food. good luck and enjoy your new friend. |

![]() Now we're less out in the boonies, but we get our fair share of coyotes, deer, bears, raccoons, big cats (lion kind, not fat domestic cats ![]()

You could try this too.. At hunting/fishing supply places, you can sometimes find lion piss, and other big cat urine.. You can spread it around your property line on trees.. The bear may avoid your area especially if it has cubs.
Also can do that to keep deer and racoons away in places. Might freak out other animals too.. nobody wants to get chomped by a lion afterall.. Bears can detect scent up to like 10 miles away I think. |
