as for the books, I've never read an LOTR book....so, the vote would go to Harry Potter, who after seeing the LOTR movies would seem to have been inspored by some of Tolkien's writings

with the movies, I've really loved both series and they both hold special places in my DVD collection...it would be like choosing a favorite child....

LOTR isn't even worth being compared with crap like Potter...
I don't understand the hype about this childish story anyway.

You sure you haven't got that the wrong way around?

And...both for different reasons (books that is). They're completely different things and don't really hold up to comparison.

If talking about films then LOTR winds hands down but the Potter films are still more than watchable.

Again - this is not really a good duo to compare. They belong in two distinct categories. But if I had to choose - it would be Lord of the Rings even though I did enjoy the Harry Potter series.

The Lord of the Rings story is the most read story in history next to the various versions of the Holy Bible.

Harry Potter.. well I've always looked at it as more of a childrens book series. I've seen the first movie when it got to commercial TV, and it was ok. But really aimed at children. Entertaining enough I guess. Not compelled to read the books though.

LOTR in general but they are really two different types of movies that get thrown together because of when they both first came out.

Yeah the movies are really nicely done.. Plus the bonus materials on the collectors DVD's is great stuff. The statuettes are cool too, lol.

LOTR..no question about it.
but i also kinda like the harry potter movies and book series.

the only prob i have with the LOTR trilogy is they didnt stick with the original story and had to chop a lot of good part in the book which should explain a lot of what happned in the movie, unlike in the HP movie where the director demanded that he wont do the movie unless the script remains faithful to the book (although in the latest HP movie, they also missed some vital scenes). Tolkien btw didnt intend for the LOTR to be a trilogy, but because of the length of the story, the publishet thought it's unwise and not economical to publish all 3 volumes in a single book. For those of you who had the patience to read the LOTR, i recommend reading The Silamrillion and The Unfinished Tales ^^

In case you may not know, a great website for LOTR is

It details upcoming dvd's, specials, events, literature, message boards, etc etc regarding the LOTR. Check it out if you haven't yet.

I would say Lord of the Rings. Been reading LOTR and the Hobbit since I was a kid.

I say its better to read about a midget with a magic ring than some nerdy kid who does magic.
