Millions? 100 billion galaxies and each of them holding 50 to 100 billion stars and planets.

I was just watching that on the news... whats really wild to think about is that we are just a speck on a speck.. there are so many more galaxies out there and we are only living in one of them.. the possibilities are endless

That would be great, I would love to see that too! That would be a truly historical event.

I can't imagine that out of all the stars/planets/galaxies out there, we are the ONLY planet with life. It just doesn't seem possible, unless you're a bible thumper.

Well, are you completey sure? Scientist's aren't! They found something that might show the end of the universe, it was on GFY a while back also, it was they are starting to think that the universe might be a sphere shape like a soccer ball.

Exactly my thoughts.

I mean, we are discovering planets similar to ours now, we spent years with only "our" galaxy/planets, we are now discovering new stuff.
So now lets see whats happens to Mars projets since all attentions are to the new discoveries.

Its great to finally see some huge historical discoveries like this one

Do you guys realize that it is not common for stars to have planets orbiting them.. Let alone how extremely rare it is for a planet to have all the elements that the Earth has.

Even if there is life on another planet, how likely is it gonna have intelligence?
Out of 6 million species on earth, only 1 was able to create technology, after billions of years of the planets creation. Universe is estimated to be only around 20 billion years old if I remember correctly.

Universe isn't that big compared to all these odds multiplied together.

There are only 10^70 atoms in the universe, 99.9999999+% of it is hydrogen and helium

Life is life, doesn't matter about intelligence. How do you know if were a new species than what is out there, and they think we're still in the stone age compared to them! Never know what you'll find out in the universe!

Yes odds are pretty high, but come on, just a discovery of a planet similar to ours or the simple fact that there is other planets with a sun and an orbit, is already a great discovery.

and yes I do belive (dispiste the odds) that tehre is live out there.

Deep thread. Exciting article. Love it!

Too bad they haven't actually detected earth-like planets yet... these are reputedly 17 times the size of Earth.

i have no doubt that there isn't life outside our earth.
its to fucking greedy to think otherwise..

universe has no age, has no limits, no end, no start. the human brain cannot comperhend that because everything we know has a start and end.. it is hard for humans to understand that there is nothing beyond nothing out there, the universe is not big, it is not small either, my point is there is no size which means there are endless numbers of planets out there... some where out there, there are suns giving off enough light and heat to the soild rocks orbiting them, which has the right mix of everything needed to make life. it happen with our earth, why cant it happen elsewhere? no end = no limits.... there IS life outside ours, give me a good reason why there cant be.

and yes, even if it is bacteria, it is still life

Its hard to find small earth sized planets that are capable of producing life.

First they measure a stars wobble to detect giant planets orbiting them then they measure star light dimming to detect small sized planets passing in front of the star.

Most planets dont even orbit in a circle motion making the weather conditons to extreme.

Another factor is that you need Bigger planets orbiting the outer edge to shield the smaller ones from getting hit by some big rock

Yeah you are right.
Human brains are too small to think the anything else besides our planet.
and if pl find live, there will be a hard time for 905 of the humans to understand that

I think that sometime soon we will find out that Captain Kirk was not from earth. He was from someplace else, and he will come here and then we will know for sure that there is life on another planet.

Just kidding.

I think that there is life on tons of those other planets, and that someof them already know about us.

Uh wrong, the universe is expanding so in that way its unlimited. But there arent more stars than i just mentioned. Actually theyre getting less and less. Stars die constantly. In x billion years from now space will be black...no stars, nothing.

The real question is whether there is *intelligent* life out there. Just think of all the millions (billions perhaps) of species on Earth that survive without any intelligence. Most likely when we find outside life it will be a rather basic creature. But sure, out there some where there is a chance that intelligent life exists.

Life on earth is very young compared to the universe itself. Good chance if theres life out there it will be older and more intelligent. Then again, maybe they are retards like most posters here.

The shitty thing is people who believe in aliens always compare them to humans. Head, 2 arms, 2 legs, you know the deal. The chances that they will look anything like humans are reallllly small.

Anyway, main problem for us or "aliens" is the distance. Even travelling at the speed of light, just getting to the nearest star will take a long time and were not anywhere near being able to reach those speeds.

As far as we can grasp that is the truth.

Some quantum theorist believe that space time can be manipulated in ways to eliminate distance as a factor.

Space time is the very fabric of space that creates things like gravity and distance.

This kind of stuff is beyond me.. but there are things that we truely dont understand. A example is the point of singularity in a black hole where space and time cease to exist as we know them.

Of course there is more "earths" out there, there is so many stars so there have to be planets like our earth somewhere.

The next level of travel will most likely be solar sails.

Kind of like a sailboat but instead of wind it feeds off of light. This will allow in theory lightspeed travel.

what if the sail gets hit by a rock or something?

I bet its hard to navigate in the speed of light.

I don't pretend to be a expert on solar sails.

Still even if you had a solar sail and could travel as fast as light the distances would still be to far.

The only way is to manipulate time space if thats even possible
