Question about WHOIS Information

I know that it's illegal to provide false contact information in the WHOIS documentation when you run a website. I've recently reported a site with false information to its registrar saying that it will take a total of 70 some days until the domain becomes available to the open market again. I've been told that once the report was filed, the registrar sends the owner of the site an email saying you have to put real information in or your domain will be forfeited. In this case, the owner even put in a fake email address so he or she will never even get the warning email.

My question to all of you is do you know how long the average registrar waits before sending the unresponsive domain to the authorities (ICANN)? Also, after that is done, does the domain still work like normal until the day of termination? Or does it get revoked right away?

Hope I didn't confuse everyone on this, and thanks in advance for the help!

yep what he said, and just because the email is incorrect does not mean they will not be notified... you have to give a valid email to any registrar you are with, duh.

I wasn't wanting to explain why but let me defend myself here. To sum things up a site that I traded traffic with started a bunch of fucking rumors, posting on other webmaster forums, and later corralling other webmasters to join together to email a bunch other sites I trade with to get me blacklisted. My traffic dropped 2/3, and so did my cashflow with it. I don't know if any of you have ever been blacklisted before but when it's 1 against 10 it's hard to fight back; even when I prove to them that they're competely lying.

After talking to my lawyer, I found out that the guy has false information for his domain, so I decided to give this a try. This guy has fucked me out of a huge amount of money, and I'm not even close to getting back to the point I was at before the lies and bullshit started flying.

You're right, but they have federal regulations to follow which is why they forward the process to icann.

You know I'd really like to know the answer to that question myself. It's amazing to me how many people actually followed his bullshit to begin with.

Here's how it works:

You report the domain to ICANN, ICANN tells the registrar about it. The registrar contacts the customer about the domain and tells them to review the info to make sure it's ok. *Most* of the time, the person will just buy proxied whois or ignore the email. I would say it's very rare that the registrar goes through with it and puts the domain in the queue to be deleted. If so, the drop process takes from 36-76+ days (see "Unpaid Names Dept" @ Register.com).
