What do you look for in a Designer?

Im Wondering because I am one, sorta.

Im 18 and im considering entering college and getting a BD in Graphic Design, or just jumping stright into the job market. Do you look for someone who acts professional or likes to screw around? I know HTML, CSS, Photoshop, GoLive and Cinema 4D. Im learning PHP, C++ and Illustrator. What do your designers know? Do you want them to think for you? You throw out some vauge ideas, and he/she makes them look good. Or do you want to be part of the creation process the whole way? In Displaying thier work, what kind of website do you look for? If at all. Thanks,

You know the answer to this question, man.

Of course it doesn't hurt to be personable, and most people like a sense of humor ... but 'screws around' ???? Come on, name a business where the screw balls (The ones who screw around rather than WORKING) are more sucessful. People like designers (and business associates of any kind) who are reliable, talented, and go above and beyond the call of duty. It's a pretty simple equation. Good luck man. -Phil PS: If you have a free ride to college, I'd take it. Just do your design work on the side. It can't hurt. |

When we hire designers, we especially look for people with good communication skills. They are often very good artists also. It takes a lot of EQ to understand how someone wants something so abstract as design to be.

Rantan - We should make a distinction between programmers and designers.

Programmers - understand PHP, Perl and are comforable in a variety of environments. Designers - a good designer should have an eye. These guys should be able to take a concept and absolutely run wild with it. We look for at least 4 years experience from our designers. In terms of education, I definitely favor candidates with a college education. However, I value their education simply because it helps them to communicate better. I would NOT suggest studying design. I've interviewed many graduates of design schools, and 'web design' programs, and I was thoroughly unimpressed. Experience is what counts here. Hope this helps!

Not saying those without design education aren't any good, there are plenty of great "uneducated" designers.. it just takes them longer to get there on the whole. There are also swathes of educated but untalented waste of spaces.. like most students not everyone applies themselves or should be in the course in the first place. That said I would of course on paper take someone with two years education and two years employment over someone with four years education. |
