What would it take to forgive your bank?

Has your bank ever made a major error that it caused you to threaten closing your account and leaving? What would it take for you to continue using them despite these major screw ups?

My bank recently made an enormous accounting error that resulted in over $100k to leave my account and caused a logistical nightmare for my accountant to fix. Everything has been corrected and they've showered me with cheesecake, gift baskets and cash to try and get my business back. I'm just wondering if I should bother closing out or stick with them despite these screw ups?

I have a second account, same bank though. It's a little awkward doing USD banking up in Canada.

If you aren't being serviced by Private Banking - then I'd have them up you to that service *no charge* for the first year. If not, go to the next bank - they'll probably offer it to you.

With the balance in my holdings account, they've waived all services fees and I have my own account manager. To be honest, since I got a dedicated rep, things have really improved. They once lost a deposit two years ago and didn't really care. This is the first time I've seen my account manager apologize and actually send me gifts and cash compensation. Gotta admit, with this kind of service, I might just stick around.

I'd stick with them.. all banks are run by fuckups. At least these fuckups now know they owe you.

Stick with them Charles. You are going to have to rebuild a new relationship with another bank etc., Accidents happen and they did try to make things right by you. I've never heard of a bank giving cash as an insentive to stay!

WireGuy, I am close enough to the border to take advantage of a BankofAmerica branch (about 10 mins away or less). I would highly advise you look into that if you are near the border. I have had the best of experience with BoA. All the Americans who complain about banks don't know shit until you try to run stuff from Canadian banks.

At least you just had a mixup with the bank. Bank of Montreal ended up dragging my parents into a LAWSUIT over a real estate deal gone bad.

It was a real clusterfuck. They sold a commercial building and held part of the mortgage, the bank held another mortgage, or something like that.

The person that bought it eventually quit making their payments to my parents so they threatened to cut off his septic system, since part of it was still located on adjacent property that my parents owned.

The person went bankrupt and tried to burn the building down. To make a long story short, his lawyer was eventually sued by the bank for various reasons, and my folks were dragged into it as a third party because of threatening to cut off his septic system. (banks says it made the property unsellable). Ended up costing them $10,000 as a settlement, and about $100,000 in legal fees.

Unfortunately we still have a large portion of our banking with them because it would cost a lot of money to switch our business over.

Actually I made them pay up, showed them the invoice my accountants charged me to balance up all the books. I was surprised they paid it. Best part was it was a check made out to me versus my company. Sweet

depends on if you believe the mistake will happen again. Banks aren't immune to screwing up. You got the money back that's the biggest thing, now you just have to decide if you think they will do it again.

Two years ago they lost a deposit. But for the most part they are pretty hassle free. I seem to get some kind of screw up every couple of years. This one was rather large to be honest. Not every day you get a heart attack when this much money leaves without your knowledge.

The difference with private banking is that you won't have to go through the branch for anything - when you get there it's leather couches & gourmet coffee & biscuits. It's a very different service - however the branches & private banking are separate divisions so the branch won't want you moving for the other service & it may not be convenient for you either if it's not in the same building.

Anyhow, with all the screwups they've been making lately - they don't want a wealthy young man with brains to make it public how they can easily screw up - if they can do it with 100k, imagine how many 5-10$ transactions get lost in the system?

They are human too - one weekend they sent me home with 42 Million dollars worth of cash clearing certificates - in other words, had I gone to a bank in bahamas & made a deal with some rogue personnel & cleared it & I could have been a very rich woman

The other bank will make errors too ...

BUT this one won't anymore . Just tell them that if there is any other fuckup, you just leave ...

Stick with them, but also open up a secondary account elsewhere. I've got 3 accounts and each one sees a third of my income. It may get a bit messy, but it's a nice little safeguard.

It's not about the popcorn or gourmet cookies - you don't wait in line - it's very quite very elegant & you rarely see any of the other customers that are there. Depends what you like - it's overpriced I'll tell you that, but if you want privacy it definitely will work for you. I'm only saying this if they offer it for free

i go through shit half of the time with the bank tellers when i deposit or cash huge checks. i think its because i'm young. whenever i have a problem i just ask to talk to the manager, the other half are really nice when i go in there because im in there depositing checks 3x a week and they recognize me.

Did you manage to deposit the checks that were expiring (void after X days)? I hope so.

I would stick with them.

That would be the ones I described in the scenario above.

They always say its best to stay with the people who screwed up becasue its likely they wont make the same mistake twice.

over 30K was stolen from my accounts 2 years ago. the bank was very good though, and placed the amount back into my accounts before they had even completed their investigation.

they've also been very good with security now, all of my stuff is under permanent lock, a bank manager has to come over and verify who i am before a penny can be taken out. i'd rather not have to go through all of that with another bank (though i do have other accounts at another bank, just don't use it very much)...

How do you get such a service? And with which bank do you use for this?
