Really depends on where you live. You make 5k/month and live in rural south you would be considered well off. You live in southern California and make 5k/month you're middle class.

here in my town, a little over 100k people, you can get a 4/2 home with a huge yard for $150k

5k a month x 12 months = 60k a year. you'll see by the census chart that that's above average for every single state in the US (2002 anyways) and in some states that's double. You'd be doing nice in my neck of the woods, just as long as you aren't up to your eyeballs in debt.
