BREATHALIZERS in every car by 2008, Proposed Law for Fighting DUI....

http://www.cato.org/dailys/07-27-04.html

It is getting out of control. These newly elected politicians along with those facing re-election are coming up with more and more bull-shit legislation to keep their asses in office. The are already attempting to pass laws which would require vehicle manufactures to install breathalizers in every vehicle produced.

Read the entire article, it has a few very good points. If you let them enroach on these civil liberties to the extent that they are already setting aside constitutional amendments thats just the stepping stone for more serious legislation in the future.

You can have a different opinion if you somehow suffered as a result of a drunk driver, but you gotta look at the big picture, you let this legislation slide and stay on the books and you are only encouraging legislators to make even more imposing laws in the future.

I think it'd be a great idea if it wasn't so flawed. I can't remember where it was exactly, but some country implemented these things for people with drunk driving offences. People would just get their friends to blow into the device for them. Some people are just determined to make life shit for everybody else.

And apparently things other than alcohol can give a drunk reading. Things as common as mouthwash, even.

Obviously you missed the POINT! They are trying to put them in EVERYONES car. Not just people who get DUI's. That means a person who never drinks will have to blow into a breathalizer to start their car and every 10 minutes to keep their car running. Explain that to your kids in the back seat. "Daddy why do you have to do that, is it because you were bad"???

I wasn't aware that driving drunk was a civil liberty. In fact, I didn't realize driving was a civil liberty.

If you're referring to the article's reference to the Supreme Court not overruling some state laws, that's how it should be.

they need a fingerprint scanner as well for a key maybe?

a fingerprint scanner in every car instead of a key would be pretty cool

I saw a commercial about something like this. I think its a good idea but there will probably be ways to "trick" the breathalizer or something.

unless they made it impossible for the drunk to have his fingerprint scanned while his friend breathes

I bet they could come up with a way to do that

the drunk would have to put his finger on the scanner and breathe in at the same time and the scanner and breathalizer would be in a position so it couldn't be fooled

Actually, if you READ THE ARTICLE, you'll see New Mexico and NY were the states that considered this and the laws DIDN'T PASS. No where does it say it's been passed or has been considered at the federal level

Of course on the flip side of the coin..

Its actualy not a good idea to do. Its going to give people a means to go out and get wasted and drive because they will have a breathalizer in their car they can utilize to see if they are over the limit once they leave the bar.

Temptation.

Regards,

Lee

The only problem I see with it is if you let other people borrow your car. Who wants to blow into someone elses breath trap?

We have those too, yet oddly, we've never received a ticket. I guess it's because we don't run yellow or red lights. Hmm. *shrug*

I believe very highly in civil liberties, but what about my right to drive on a highway that is safer from drunks and idiot divers who zip down the highway at illegal speeds and run red lights and generally don't give a fuck about anyone else? These laws aren't put in place for the fun of it. Maybe if the general population wasn't so fucking stupid we wouldn't have politicians feeling like they NEED to pass laws like this.

That is ridiculous. I believe they only belong in the cars of people that have had DUI's.

I don't drink and drive, I don't want to pay an extra 1000 for my next car just because of the ones that do.

These stupid laws pass because the politicians feel that they "must" create new legislature in order to get votes. They come up with these crazy laws that sound great on paper but do nothing but creat havoc in the street. In Michigan they just passed new legislature which DOUBLED the fines on over 150 different tickets. These range from DUI to no proof of registration, (this includes if you forget to sign the back of the little paper in your glove box!) DUI now cost an average $4000, not including attourney fees. THE REASON THEY DID THIS WAS BECAUSE SOME JACKASSES IN LANSING CAME UP WITH IT INSTEAD OF RAISING TAXES, AGAIN. - THAT'S RIGHT, they thought this was a better idea. It was voted on buy the local gov's and judges, most of whom didn't read it, just went on the "just sign it, it's good" suggestions from Lansing. a overwhelming majority of those judges are now opposing the new law and fighting to get it repealed. The reason is because it is ruining families and careers.

TO MAKE IT CLEAR: I DO NOT SUPPORT DRUNK DRIVING

AND ONCE AGAIN, PEOPLE ARE NOT READING THE ARTICLE!

I understand that you don't support drunk driving. I'm sure very few people do. And I'm not saying that I necessarily agree with these types of laws, and I don't necessarily believe that the politicians are right in trying to pass these types of laws, I'm simply stating that if people would wake up and stop being such idiots we wouldn't have problems with polititians feeling like they have no other choice than to enact laws like this. It's an honest fact that there are a HUGE number of REALLY STUPID people here in the U.S. and it's sad that we have to have "idiot laws" to protect us from them. I mean it should be common sense not to drink and drive, but look how many people are injured and killed by drunk drivers every year. Obviously we can't just kick sense into all of the country's morons, so what choice is left? Simply living with the idiocy and risking our lives every day just driving the kids to soccer practice? There are no easy answers. $1,000 doesn't seem like alot to me to give me even a small amount of increased safety.

Maybe they *should* put them only in drunk drivers cars, but what about first timers? There's a first time for everything and I'm sure there are quite a few people killed every year by first-time idiots.

sounds like a good idea, sure it will suck for those who goto bars and drink alone, but i hate bad drivers with passion.

and driving drunk is about as bad as it gets =P

and another thing kids, if this passes that means 1 less reason for cops to pull you over, so that water bong is safe and sound in your backseat

it also sucks for the freedom issue, more and more freedom is getting taken away and its ridiculous that the government has to protect people from themselves... but you never know when some jackass is going to ram into you at 80mph because he was too trashed to notice his light was red.

my mother was killed by a drunk driver on her birthday... by a guy who had his third accident causing fatalities while driving drunk.

I hope that the people closest to you can die a slow and painful death, bleeding to death while laying face down in a ditch in the middle of nowhere and in the dark as my mother did, while you so expertly debate the pros and cons of such a law.

forgot to add that for his 3rd time killing people and for killing my mother, he only served two years in jail. apparently the court feels its ok to kill when you "have a disease" such as being a drunk idiot.

I wonder what the death toll will be from drunk driving from today and 2008 when (if) it passes and goes into play?

I hope that the people closest to you can die a slow and painful death, bleeding to death while laying face down in a ditch in the middle of nowhere and in the dark as my mother did, while you so expertly debate the pros and cons of such a law.

So you'd be willing to install one of these on every vehicle you own and pay the monitoring fees, even though you're not a drunk driver?

Punish the drunks, not everyone else.

Huh? I was asking if he was willing to install one of these on all of his vehicles since he seems to think the proposed law had merit.

sure in hindsight I can see people who have loved lost ones willing to pay monetarily versus paying with a loved one. Do you still not get it?

You don't get it. I'm not talking about money or loved ones. I'm talking about the inconvenience of having one of these systems in your vehicle. Sure, it sounds simple on paper, but I know people who have had them in their vehicles.

I'm wondering if the people that say they are for this law are still going to be for it when they realize they have to go out in the morning and blow in one of these things to start their vehicle.

No more remote starters in winter, because they don't work with these systems.

If your vehicle has been sitting for more than a few hours you have to wait about 3 minutes for the system to warm up. In a hurry to get somewhere? Too bad. Need to get to the hospital in a hurry? Too bad, sit there and wait for your system to warm up.

When driving down the freeway at 70 MPH, get ready for the loud piercing "beep" and reach for the handset to blow into. Think cell phones are dangerous? Try getting the technique down for blowing into one of these things when you are driving. Blow for 3 seconds, hum for 3 seconds, and continue blowing until it says you are OK. If you mess up and don't do a proper blow within 3 minutes then get ready for the flashing lights and siren to go off on your vehicle.

My point is anyone that says they are for this law would change their mind once they had to actually use one of them to get to work everyday.

Please these laws won't pass if they due they will be challenged. The worst case come move where I live. Guy in the paper got convited of his 3rd DUI and other stuff got 60 days and a fine. Seems drinking and driveing here isn't taken seriously.

Anyways please READ you own article

Even scarier are the laws that didn't pass, but will inevitably be introduced again. New Mexico's state legislature nearly passed a law that would mandate ignition interlock devices on every car sold in the state beginning in 2008, regardless of the buyer's driving record. Drivers would have been required to pass a breath test to start the car, then again every 10 minutes while driving.

Ok common sense would tell you if very dangerous to ask someone to blow into a breathalizer going down the interstate at 70 MHP every 10 minutes. Anyways buy a 2007 model and keep it in good shape or move out of NM.

I believe very highly in civil liberties, but what about my right to drive on a highway that is safer from drunks and idiot divers who zip down the highway at illegal speeds and run red lights and generally don't give a fuck about anyone else? These laws aren't put in place for the fun of it. Maybe if the general population wasn't so fucking stupid we wouldn't have politicians feeling like they NEED to pass laws like this.
driving isnt a right, its a priveledge.

I would not either but i would expect if they did this, insurance company could drop there price. Which then would be more attractive to the consumer.

I'm sure the decreased risk of drunk drivers would soon be offset by the accidents caused by people trying to blow into one of these systems when they should be concentrating on the road.
