!#*&^$! IP Address

Goddammit. Got the new ethernet card, got it in place. No IP and when I refresh the IP it gives me a crap one. How the hell do I make this fucking thing work??

And don't tell me that the card is bad. It works on the slave drive just fine.

Can you force an IP # instead of relying on DHCP for one ? I don't know enough about your setup to even know if you're getting an IP from a local hub/router or what.

How do I do that? I'm just on a small two-puter network here, through a router that connects to the DSL line.

I'll try.. let's see.. if you're running XP.. might be like
Control Panel > Networking Places - Right Click / Properties
Look for TCP/IP and click Properties button.

You can tell it to use the following address..
and if your gateway is 192.168.1.1 for example, you can probably go with something like 192.168.1.101 to force your system to use that local ip. Enter your subnet mask and gateway ( usually something like 255.255.255.0 and 192.168.1.1 ).

Are you able to connect to the hub or router with that card ? I'm guessing you aren't and the above MIGHT help if I remember what I'm doing correctly.

Enter 192.168.1.1 for example in your browser to see if that's the right ip for your local gateway. What hub or router brand do you have ?

I get that problem too all I have to do is reset the router & then refresh the ip - when that doesn't work - I turn everything off & reboot but the computer with the problem gets started first so it hopefully picks up the first IP

Not sure what your trying to setup
but you can check the ip by going to start, run then type in: ipconfig

EDIT sorry that's wrong type: cmd
and then ipconfig into the command promt box

i thought the ipconfig renew wasn't working for her, she said it wasn't giving her a good ip # which means it's probably not getting dhcp right and is using some default ip it usually puts in place.

need to see if she can reach the router or hub first.. and maybe she has to force an ip to get it to recognize at first.

then another option i'm thinking is to run netdiag.. on XP from command prompt you can type: netsh diag gui
and a window will come up .. click scan

Unplug the router. Unplug the cable modem.

Plug your cable modem directly to the computer.

Re-Boot.

An re-initialize your router (With the setup CD).

Ok so you aren't even connecting to your gateway now but it could be because we entered those numbers early in Network TCP/IP Properties and they were incorrect.

Can you go change that back to Obtain IP Address Automatically and then run the Diag again ?

Belkin router
http://192.168.2.1
this is not going to help if you don't get the IP assigned first though.

Make sure you are plugged in to one of the regular ports not the one labeled "WAN" and reboot/power cycle everything

If you are set to get DHCP address and you don't get one when doing this, you are shit out of luck. Call Belkin support.. their routers suck, next time buy a linksys

was reading about your error earlier and saw someone mentioned adaware and a tcp corruption with xp, which is why I asked.
