What Does the Most Damage during a Hurricane?

I've been watching the news of all the disaster in Florida and it got me wondering; what inflicts the most damage during a hurricane?

Is it the Tidal Surge? The High Winds? Maybe it's the flood waters or flying debris...I don't know. I would say the high winds but I'm probably wrong because if that were so why wasn't Orlando or any other city in Charley's path devastated as bad as coast cities like Punta Gorda and Port Charlotte?

really it just depends on the storm
The storm surge can do a lot of damage to the coastal areas think of the water rising on the coast I think with this storm at least 15ft in some areas.. So houses right on the beach would be wiped out.. But over all I'd say it's the winds..

The reason this storm was worse on the west coast is because it weakened a great deal by the time it hit the center of the state and the east coast. But if you look at a storm like Andrew it stayed strong the entire time and was like a giant tornado path all the way across the state.

I think it's the people breaking their old shit and blaming it on the hurricane for insurance.

none of the above...

The tornadoes... Everything does damage but the tornadoes by far are the biggest problem.

If only you knew how true that really was. I knew a couple of people whose stuff "disappeared" before the storm. Hoping to file a claim after the storm for it.

Imagine taking off in a jet plane with no windows in the cockpit. That's what the wind force is like.

The winds destroy property. The water kills the people.

Definately water!! :-)

Next is where homes are not really designed to handle hurricane weather.

I'm amazed that the actually allowed people to stay in places like mobile home parks there - that is utter lunacy and probably contributed to the death toll.

The first thing that gets "wiped" in more hurricane prone countries are any "shack towns" - the death toll there can be massive. 12,000 were killed in Guatamala a few years ago because of this and the effects of water/mudslides.

PS... I'm still amazed that, what appears to be the majority of homes in Florida, are built "on the cheap" - just breeze blocks and chipboard. That is sure not designed to sustain any severe weather conditions.
