AN IRAQ veteran who returned from the desert a broken man has killed himself.

Private Peter Mahoney went to war believing Saddam Hussein was threatening world peace with weapons of mass destruction.

But the loving father-of-four came home disillusioned and convinced he was the victim of a political smokescreen.

Peter, 45, told his family how his unit came up against Iraqi troops armed only with sticks and stones....

The point was it's pretty hard to kill over 900 American soldiers with sticks. Have you ever killed someone with a stick? It's hard to do. Especially if they are shooting at you with machine guns and out of helicopters.

Just because some of the soldiers only carried sticks and rocks doesn't mean that others don't have guns. Nowhere did it say that there were no guns in Iraq, everyone sees this on TV for themselves. I don't find it too far fetched that some Iraqi fighters are unarmed.

And on that note, I wouldn't care if they were carrying the most advanced weaponry available. The US invaded their country and they are doing the same thing anybody would do in fighting for their homeland. If all of these people really hated Saddams guts as much as most Americans seem to then they should be happy we are there and we wouldn't have to worry about our soldiers being beat down by stick carrying Iraqis.

But someone said it best, if you join the military you join up knowing you may be called on to kill whoever you are told to kill without question. I know you joined during peace, I know you joined to get out of the hood or trailor park, i know they got you when you were fresh out of high school, but by now ALL of us know the deal, no excuses. I have yet to come across someone who was not currently in command or was not a higher up in the military when enrolled who has told me to go into the military. All I ever hear is do not do it, do not go, they will use you and throw you away. How come these people can complain about how popular media makes them do drugs, rape women and steal but ALL the movies out there that show you that war is hell and that you have to kill without reguard for the enemy do not talk them out of joining...... selective influince I suppose

The guy is 45 the oldest you can be to enter the military is 32. He is a private. This means he has to have been in for a period of time and busted down in rank. I think you are forgetting, our warriors are all volunteers. This means they may be called to go to a war they don't agree with. If you are thinking about joining the military, a competent person would understand this, and choose not to join if this was something he/she was strongly against.

Luckily, the majority of our soldiers understand the mission, and do the job they are called upon with honor. My point is, if you don't want to be a warrior, don't sign up.

WASHINGTON -- At the end of the month, the first members of the Army's Individual Ready Reserve to be called up involuntarily since the Gulf War report for duty.

About 3,800 have received their orders for duty in Iraq and Afghanistan so far. Associated Press Radio has learned approximately 350 reservists have filed appeals.

The head of the Army's Human Resource Command, Col. Debra Cook, said medical and family problems are the most common reasons. No requests for delays or exemptions have been granted yet.

Jon from Illinois is appealing his deployment. His wife is serving in Iraq right now and he doesn't know what to do with the kids. Jon is a Gulf War vet who thought the IRR was a "safe haven" where members were only called up as a last resort. He said, "to me, Iraq is not a last resort situation."

I don't think someone could get at Bush, but it is more than likely he could make himself heard. I just don't understand it, why would he kill himself? Sorry Mr. repeat after Rush, but when you join the military, even when your term expires, the contract says you can be called up after that for a specific amount of time. It is important to read a contract before you join the military. I'm sure some don't want to serve in Iraq, but they all signed up to be in the military and that can include any location the goverment decides.

Here is what the IRR is:

The Individual Ready Reserve category is distinct from regular Army Reserve because the troops do not perform any military service during the year yet are still eligible to be called to active duty.

I think the guys in this category are aware that they are in this category. They know this because they got into the Military, not by accident, but because they VOLUNTEERED. Facts are troublesome things.
