Canadian Banks and US Checks

Whenever I deposit a US check in my Canadian bank they hold the check for 21 days! What kind of poopy caca is that? Lucky for me I'm setting up wire transfers.

Does anyone else have this problem?

nope... i've never had a problem like that... not even when I was starting out.

Including checks for over $1000 US.

I think you should have a talk to your bank!

That sucks... There check policies are getting really strict.. There even opening up mail randomly i was told.... There tightning up,21 days is pathetic.....

I have guys in russia who want a wire for 100 dollars made cause it takes forever to clear.. I'm glad we dont have those problems..It's not only Canada its the rest of the damm world...

A lot of canadian banks stiff you with long waiting times, I used to have an account at the toronto office of citibank but they closed all the regular banking accounts - now its just a corporate office.

after a while they usually change the cheques right away - i use scotia bank and I have no problem.

I am with CIBC and no problems so far. Have they given you a reason for why they are holding it for 21 days?

I wait anywhere from 30 to 45 days to clear US/UK checks here. And when the check comes from Canada (USD$ in a US bank) I get it in 4-7 days. When it's from US, it takes 4-10 days. Only got 1 check (about 80 bucks) from UK. I pay about 15 bucks to clear a check, sometimes $15 to clear 2 or 3 checks at the same time.

Hope to get more checks soon. The last 2 months were the worst for me, no money. Zero. Nada.

I use the Royal Bank of Canada, my checks go thru instantly, they also now have ATM machines which allow you to withdraw US funds from your US account.

By the way, stay right the fuck away from CanadaTrust. I was going to switch my personal business account to them, and found out they would hold all my checks for 7 days, (I explained all checks were issued by goverment), didn't matter, they wanted to hold all out of province checks for 14 days, (once again all gov. checks), and all US checks for 30 days, (once again all govt.).Piss off, my creditors don't allow me that time.

Im with the hong kong bank of canada and they hold cheques, money orders they dont know(ie 7-11 money orders)and even cashiers cheques for the 21 days. That bites entirely.
Direct wire transfers are the best way to go.

Sounds stupid to me that they have to hold on to your checks.
I get my money right away for a fee of $6 and it donsn´t matter how many checks I deposit its only $6.
And I´m in Denmark.

It's very important to try new banks

It costs me nothing to deposit cheques, and they hold my money for zero days

It also helps for you to build up some savings, this gives you a bit of clout

TD Canada trust was charging me $2.75 for each us$ deposit, I complained and told them my other bank was not... guess what, no charges

If you are doing a lot of deposits, you should find the main branch of your bank in the area which you live in, I have found that the small branch managers and clerks have about as much clout as a 7-11 clerk down the streeet, and about as much intelligence as the drive thru order girl

My Wife is an ebay maniac, and she has had the problem for a long time....I find it hard to believe that other Cdn Banks do not hold the payments for 21days as this is standard procedure for any US check. One solution is to talk to your bank and ask for a waiver when US checks are deposited (meaning they will clear the funds for any check up to a certain amount, and if the check bounces then your account will just be debited the amount)

also, try using a credit union...they don't kill you with service fees, and are "usually" more willing to do things like check waivers

Can anyone tell me the US/Candian exchange rate? I think I got ripped off. The bank I went to gave me $1.25 for each US dollar, but I saw a few other places near the border that said it was $1.50. A quarter doesn't seem like much, but when you exchange several hundred dollars, it adds up.

I use a Credit Union as well. Have had no problems - no charge for clearing, no holds - they bend over backwards to help if there is a problem. Bank of Montreal wanted to hold 21 days and charge for clearing. Banks suck!

Sure sounds like your dealing with a trust company, some bag munching organization like the former Canada Trust. You can usually get the bank to disregard the 21 day processing once you establish a regular deposit pattern from the same payee, or have the bank call the cheque in.

hey Westin, im with Canada Trust and what I've found works best to avoid having cheques held for a month is just to disposit them into the ATM machine, just skip going to the tellers at all and do your banking with the machine...I drop a check in and 24 hours later its converted to canadian and I can withdrawl whatever the amount was. No screwy teller trying to tell you they have to hold it for some BS amount of time. Seems to be working for me not bad, on any small or large check. Just my .2 cents
