'Bohemian Rhapsody' by Queen is another great rock song. Wasn't it recently ranked the #1 song of all time in the UK or something like that?

Free Bird is probably my favorite song, but I duno if I would consider it Heavy Metal, more just Southern Rock.

Iron Maiden - Run to the Hills would probably be my favorite.

No question asked THE best song is :
Ace of Spades by Motorhead

Iron Maiden - Run to the Hills is right up there on my list

someone else said ST's - you can't bring me down - but i dont know if regard that as heavy metal i always thought of it as skaterpunk - but if it counts then that is right up there along with their song Pepsi

I'm not much into heavy metal, but these two are worth listening:

Motorhead - Born To Raise Hell
Pantera - The Great Southern Trendkill

not just the song, the full albums

Great classic hard rock tune...... but I wouldn't think of it as heavy metal.

Here's my list....

Priest - electric eye
Sabbath - neon knights
Maiden - run to the hills
Ratt - round and round
Skid Row - we are the youth gone wild

I agree with Ace Of Spades..it just feels like metal. Mind you, many of my friends would aruge that most of the songs in this thread aren't metal enough for them. There are so many types of metal today that it is hard to pick a group of songs that represent them all. When I am in the mood for Cradle of Filth or Rammstien then Motorhead isn't going to fit the bill but sometimes I just want to sit back and listen to some GnR.

Neither is RATT but there one of my top 5 favorites, they were very talented even though getting started in the 80's in LA. Warren De Martini is a great guitarist

Actually several "top 50 metal bands" sites on the net list Ratt in the top 10. Some classified them as "glam metal", but still metal.

I'll add here regarding Metallica...... I've never liked them, and on searching for "top metal bands of all time" most of those lists agreed with me, surpisingly enough.

Fucking great thread. We need like a top 25 to be fair, but here are my votes.

1. Iron Maiden - Fear of the Dark
2. Metallica - Fade to Black
3. Iced Earth - Melancholy
4. Cradle of Filth - Hallowed Be Thy Name (Iron Maiden cover, better than the original)
5. Too many good songs deserve #5, I can't decide
