I finally caught a shooting star... (pic)

Caught me one tonight... Took this pic about 20 mins ago!

Every August, when many people are vacationing in the country where skies are dark, the best-known meteor shower makes its appearance. The annual Perseid meteor shower, as it is called, promised to put on an above average display this year.

The event is also known as "The Tears of St. Lawrence."

Laurentius, a Christian deacon, is said to have been martyred by the Romans in 258 AD on an iron outdoor stove. It was in the midst of this torture that Laurentius cried out: "I am already roasted on one side and, if thou wouldst have me well cooked, it is time to turn me on the other."

The saint?s death was commemorated on his feast day, Aug. 10. King Phillip II of Spain built his monastery place the "Escorial," on the plan of the holy gridiron. And the abundance of shooting stars seen annually between approximately Aug. 8 and 14 have come to be known as St. Lawrence?s "fiery tears."

Nice. I was doing a long exposure last week and two shooting stars streaked across the sky, but their light for less than a second wasn't enough to show up in the final image.

One of the meteorites did a very bright flash at the end of its travel which I have never seen before... all of the others just streak and die out.

The image was taken at 9pm. The reason it looks a lot like a daylight shot is because the moon was out (full) and it was a 16 minute exposure.

At first I thought it looked silly because the sky was too light, but I've decided I like the "daylight with stars" look

It is apparently a 16 min. exposure; thise aren't shooting stars, but the normal progression of stars in the sky over 16 minutes. The shooting stars, as explained by Rowan, didn't show up in the photo because in a 16 min. exposure, a 1 second flash of light is nothing, especially if the moon is out (as apparently was the case in this pic).

Nevertheless, it is a pretty cool pic I'm really surprised that the colors came out as vivid as they did under 16 mins. of moonlight.
