REPUBLICANS PLAN PUSH FOR ELIMINATION OF IRS

A domestic centerpiece of the Bush/GOP agenda for a second Bush term is getting rid of the Internal Revenue Service, the DRUDGE REPORT has learned.

The Speaker of the House will push for replacing the nation's current tax system with a national sales tax or a value added tax, Hill sources tell DRUDGE.

"People ask me if I?m really calling for the elimination of the IRS, and I say I think that?s a great thing to do for future generations of Americans," Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert explains in his new book, to be released on Wednesday.

"Pushing reform legislation will be difficult. Change of any sort seldom comes easy. But these changes are critical to our economic vitality and our economic security abroad," Hastert declares in SPEAKER: LESSONS FROM FORTY YEARS IN COACHING AND POLITICS.

"?If you own property, stock, or, say, one hundred acres of farmland and tax time is approaching, you don?t want to make a mistake, so you?re almost obliged to go to a certified public accountant, tax preparer, or tax attorney to help you file a correct return. That costs a lot of money. Now multiply the amount you have to pay by the total number of people who are in the same boat. You can?t. No one can because precise numbers don?t exist. But we can stipulate that we?re talking about a huge amount. Now consider that a flat tax, national sales tax, or VAT would not only eliminate the need to do this, it could also eliminate the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) itself and make the process of paying taxes much easier."

"By adopting a VAT, sales tax, or some other alternative, we could begin to change productivity. If you can do that, you can change gross national product and start growing the economy. You could double the economy over the next fifteen years. All of a sudden, the problem of what future generations owe in Social Security and Medicare won?t be so daunting anymore. The answer is to grow the economy, and the key to doing that is making sure we have a tax system that attracts capital and builds incentives to keep it here instead of forcing it out to other nations."

No matter how the tax is calculated, they will end up taking in just as much money. They have to. Taxing sales, instead of income, will just cause rich people to save more, spend more money overseas, and otherwise ensure that we aren't putting money back into our economy. It's just an attention-getting tactic since everyone hates income tax.

In the UK, they have a 17.5% VAT on almost everything, and still have the same ~30% taxes that we do in the US. So, what's the plan? Maybe a 35% sales tax? How is that any better than a 30% income tax?

what a fucking disaster that would be - the US is one of the only countries that doesn't have a VAT/GST type tax - just mentioning this will increase the chances of an American VAT tax and believe me income tax ain't every going away - so you'll wind up with a VAT tax AND income tax.

and getting rid of the IRS in favor of a VAT tax creates a whole other bureaucracy - you think businesses don't try to avoid paying that VAT tax? every business, from the smallest to the biggest now has more paperwork and then of course the government has to do tons of audits to try to keep businesses honest.

flat tax ain't a bad idea tho.

the taxes overseas were lunacy. some countries, like portugal, had a double vat. i'd pay a vat online for something i bought from the uk and then portugal would hold the product until i came in and paid their customs tax.

A thought from the peanut gallery insists that if you charge tax on every piece of merchandise you buy domestically, instead of charging the tax you supposedly pay out of your income --- we wouldn't have people cheating on their taxes.

Imagine for a moment the supposed millions of illegal immigrants who aren't paying taxes, yet have jobs --- if we taxed them on purchasing items in our country with the money they make...

IF this were implemented cheating on taxes would drop drastically because you would have to pay it in order to get your merchandise, of course you would pay equivelent of what you're being charged on your income taxes but ponder for a moment --- with all of these people not cheating on taxes as they are able to now with these loopholes, we would have to pay a lesser rate --- like in insurance fraud, without it our rates would be drastically lower.

But let's be realistic, such a change couldn't happen because of the current system in place -- hey I have $100,000 in savings that you've already taken the income tax out of, now I have to pay it again when buying something?

Plus, this is the government, need I remind you how they could fuck up anything?

If I thought there was a chance in hell of this happening, I might switch my vote to Bush. But I doubt it.

The buearcarcy for a national sales tax would be much cheaper then the current IRS because it only has to worry about 9 million bussinesses, vs 170 million tax payers AND 9 million bussiness.
