$1,000 for toys and related entertainment things. per MONTH???? LOL .. Hell.. I remember getting a $100 spending budget for christmas... those were the toys I had for the year..

Look.. you said it.. high income families... If you send your kids to public school.. have them work part time at 16+ .. dont spend $1000 in entertainment/month and and you can manage raising kids on nearly ANY budgets... I dont need to have kids to know that.. I just need to look around..

And that only counts direct expenses, when you factor in the value of your time dedicated to raising of the child it goes even higher.

Right there you've got $12k a year just on that alone.

I don't spend $1K on MYSELF in one month. Hell I hardly spend $300 on my own entertainment, food, and other "extras". Who in the hell spends that much money on their kids?

Not everyone is trying to compete with the Jones'.

That's bullshit. If you're spending 1k a month on a childs TOYS a month, then that will grow up to be a fucked up spoiled child.

I've noticed in your posts that you've been rich WAY too long to even recognize reality anymore.

This is even more ridiculous than the cat stuff.

Honeyslut 08-01-2004 02:30 PM

congrats on the baby ! You will make very nice parents ! :)

I think what is meant by the million is the percentage of money spent on health care, food, house payments ,bills, entertainment, dental, lessons, cars, etc etc for the kids.

Think about it ! You pay for health care for a total family instead of two people. You buy more food for a full family.

Heck, I have a truck payment now and alot higher gas bill cause I gave one of my daughters my car.

fr33s3x 08-01-2004 02:33 PM

Congrats, and have fun with the baby

give me a break . . . . try parenting rather than buying toys to keep them busy.

no way in hell does a good parent need to spend $1k/mo on fucking toys . . . . if you got it, and want to, fine, but hardly mandatory

you have a very weird idea of life here I guess, out of healthcare, dental care, employment, schools expense, please be advised that there is insurance for health and dental, there are free public schools, and who knows WTF you are talking about re: emplyment.

You have been watching too many Michael Moore documentaries I think

I spend far more than $1000 a month on the three kids... I spend more on them in a week than I do on myself in a year.

each? for entertainment and toys?

SureFire 08-01-2004 07:41 PM

Congrats angeleyes & ice. :)

angeleyes, talk to your doctor about your concerns regarding prescription drug intake during the first three months?you will be happy that you did.

For the rest, raising children are expensive and even more so if you are divorce and paying child support and still want the right so see your children almost hassle free.

Not sure if a thousand bucks a month was spent on toys but I know a lot money was spent for current cloths trends, class outings, friends outings, birthday gifts for friends and the list goes on not including daily living expenses (fifty/fifty custody agreement with paying child support that extra expenses should of been paid by the mother).

I love my stepdaughters but there were times when I wanted to say the hell with them, they cost too much?why am I worrying about paying our bills on time and forking over money for their needs. I asked my mom once if this was normal and she asked if I remember eating turkey meals for a week. I said no and she then asked if I remember the horse show that I won first place in one class. I still remember the day and she said think as family.

KRL, isn?t far off. Wait until you are helping your children through college to pass judgment. That is when you really feel the pinch (rich or poor) and according to US law, parents have no obligation to do so.

$1000 a month is only $30 a day. You think $30 a day is overboard?

He buys his yu-gi-oh cards, hot wheels, collector car models, goes to arcades, movies, buys magazines, playstation 2 games go for $50 a pop, movie dvds, computer games, etc. If you can't see how that all adds up to $1,000 a month then you must not have kids either.

And I hardly think that's spoiling a kid. All his friends buy and get the same stuff so I'm doing nothing different than any of the other parents I know from his school.

My ex spends even more than I do on him. I really don't believe in buying designer clothes at that age but she does so what am I supposed to do start a fricking war with her cause she'll buy him a pair of high end Nike's that will be worn out in a couple months? That's her perogative.

High income is usually considered up to $500,000 a year and wealthy is above $500,000 a year and into the millions.

Joesho 08-01-2004 08:01 PM

I have to agree with KRL here, it is not a lot to spend 1000 a month on your kid
it is very easy to do, ( not that if you dont the kid will turn out like BradM or anything) but it is very expensive to raise kids now days, not like it was even ten years ago...

$30 a day on ENTERTAINMENT is overboard. all that shit you just mentioned is shit that a kid uses INSIDE THE HOUSE...I didn't see one thing that you mentioned that goes towards the EDUCATION of that child. It's all junk and bullshit....Hell, there are parents who can afford to buy all of that crap for their kids but they won't because it's nonsense....Give the child a fucking book for God's sake....How much does that kid weigh?

Buy the kid a bike and tell him to go his ass outside and get some exercise....Why in the hell would a kid need collector cars, hot wheels, playstation games and movie dvd's? You know what I use? CABLE TELEVISION AND BOOKS. I also take my oldest daughter to the library so that she can expand her mind.

My oldest daughter gets just about anything she wants within reason but I'm NOT going to spend a lot of money on bullshit that means absolutely nothing....There's kids out here that live full and happy lives out on a farm with home education and grow up to be very successful.

And using the reasoning that "the other kids at his school gets it" is bullshit. Give the child a backbone and help the child use some fucking restraint.

Fuck, that's why there's the Columbine epidemic...Kids who get all of the bullshit they want without any substance to back it up.

gregtx 08-01-2004 08:19 PM

congrats IIB and AE... you are going to love parenthood

kids don't get expensive until they get older...

i've got a two yr old.. and there is no way i'm spending $1k a month on her... call me cheap.. but hey.. she does not go without ;)

besides.. any toys and extravagant clothes are what grandparents are for....

Head 08-01-2004 08:23 PM

he's talking about TOYS and ENTERTAINMENT ! I paid for my freakin' entertainemnt with my $20/month allowance... I then started delivering newspapers and had a bit more money but never spended more than $50/month average for my "entertainment"... I played hockey which costed around $1000 overall for the year.. thats less than $100 month. ..(but didnt pay) $250/year ski pass.. $100 movies... $100 restaurants... Thats my entertainment for the year...which I was paying.,..

First all congrats Jen...

Now the bad part---no partying, drinking or smoking!!!! Can't do that shit and be pregnaut...

Krl--I have 2 kids 13 & 10..I'm not sure if your correct or not but in any event yes its fucken expensive.. It depends what you can do for your kids.

For instance lets take camp.. Overnight camp is $6000 to $7000 per kid in my area. Day camp is $3000. I think camp can start at 4 or 5..Camp can fucken knock you by itself..

I think it mostly depends on where you live.. I'm in Phila burbs..Its real expensive but probably one of the best school districts in Pa as well as the nation....

As Greg TX said the beginning is cheap except for baby sitting..The older they get the more expensive it is..

I do have one piece of advise for everyone.. Put away as much cash as you can spare once the kid is born and put it away in the best long term stocks with dividend reinvestemnt plans..If you don't touch it can sit for close to 20 years before they start college..
