How common are manual bannings on Google?

I am under the impression that MANUAL bannings don't happen very often and generally only for something SERIOUSLY spammy. Do any of you SEO gurus dissagree and if so, why?

Manual bannings are against their philosophy and only done in very extreme cases...they'd rather hire 20 people to improve the algo than 5 people to ban manually.

I also have the same feeling, no manual banning but in very rare cases, of copyright infringements related to big companies, etc.

Manual are done for complaints. For example if some shitbird accidentally ends up in the top 10 for "girl scouts" with their Schoolgirl Slut Girlscout Gallery and someone complains it will be out of there with the quickness. I've had things removed quickly on more than a few occasions. I don't know if they'll flag the domain but they'll certainly yank the page from the results in question.

manual bans happens more often than you think and for a variety of reasons.
Google hates getting owned and if a site does to well in their algo google will hand review it.

I agree. I've read about something leading to that. From what i understand, when a complaint is done, for what ever reason, it gets manuallu reviewed.

True, but they do take their merry ass time to actually do a banning if you ask me.

Sounds like you have reported me.

A manual ban is the best ban cos it means that google's algo cant pick it up so you can just move domains.
In 2 months you are doing it all over again.
I already see smashingthumbs coming back in a new form.

I have never reported anyone (yet). Although the guy who runs cryguy.com (new version of payshots.com) is starting to piss me off

Payshots.com really was an overkill because they did tons of referral based spamming. As a result, I think Google's latest update disregards a lot of referral links as a lot of my scripts are no longer working to the same degree as they used to.

And nope, I don't do cloaking (much) so I don't think that would be me

I don't usually like the idea of buying links because then people will know what my sites are

But what are you charging?

Another SEO finding my sites is something I fear
I'd rather it was someone with a high PR site that has no idea what they're doing.

LOL

heh. SEO's speak an entirely different language. My favorite threads are SEO threads, they're so cryptic.

To tell you the truth WG, i never bother checking out someone elses sites.I am too busy trying to manage my own and I would never compromise another persons income.
I am even friends with people who plagiarise and rip my content.
But I understand your wariness completely.
