Why I'm keeping my day job

.... because in our never ending greed to make a fast buck, we are destroying the internet (web site by web site). Technology has allowed us to invade the privacy of others in ways that turn my stomach.

Spam has almost completely ruined the email system. I just had to abandoned another account because of all the goddamn spam.

Talking 'porn' banners have caused many surfers (and some webmasters) to surf without sound.

Popup console hells and annoying browser crashing flash advertisements have made it impossible to surf with java and flash turned on.

Viruses and spyware have taken over our computers and made it impossible to surf without constantly having to install the latest versions of software designed to combat these problems.

I have personally known people who have sold their computers and will not buy new ones because of all this shit. We keep saying that more and more people come to the internet every month. What we don't say, however, is that more and more people are leaving the internet every month too.

Like anything else that has ever been promising in our modern world, the internet will inevitable be destroyed by greedy, money grubbing assholes out to make a quick buck without any concern whatsoever for the future. I am keeping my day job because I want something to go back to when it all collapses.

Pardon me for being a dumbass but couldn't something be done eventually to keep spyware from every being installed?

Even if it comes down to requiring any program that changes the registry to be centrally authorized by someone you would think they could do something about it if they wanted.

I'm sure something could be done, although I'm no expert on this. Unfortunately, the spyware makers, like the virus makers before them, will just write new spyware programs which will circumvent the blocking software, resulting in a never ending circle of new spyware versions followed by new spyware blocker versions. The result? More and more $$ being thrown at the problem, which will ultimately translate into higher and higher costs for all of us who use the net.

There is some legislation in the works which will make spyware illegal (if it passes). Unfortunately, that won't do anything to stop spyware from companies outside the reach of the law (i.e., outside the USA). There has been some talk at the UN about an international effort to combat the problem, but those clown can't agree on the time of day, much less something important like this.

Don't be a dumbass surfer and none of that stuff will bother you.

The only thing that does bother me is the email spam, but I've done a pretty good job in keeping it to a minimum.
I only download from trusted sources, I don't surf for "porn" from google because I don't need to, and if you were an adult webmaster, you wouldn't either (isn't that what this site is for?)
I have a google tool bar (that I lurve so much! )
I use AVG virus protection and it works like a charm, and I didn't have to pay for it or download the "cracked" version because it is already free!

And I haven't wanted to search with sound since the first AOLer designed her first teddybear-rainbow-country rose-midi-crap-website.
I highly doubt it will ruin the internet, it's survival of the fittest - those who go crazy from it can leave, and I thank them for it.

Oddly enough, I get much less spam than I used to.

Maybe I'm an optimist but I believe that there's a solution to every problem. New technology combined with tougher laws could take care of 95% of the problems you mentioned in your post.

Your post nicely illustrates the attitude problem many adult webmasters have regarding this issue Yes, these are all surfer related concerns. But it is the surfer who makes us money. As a result, we should care a little more about his/her surfing experience.

As an adult webmaster, I want an internet environment where the surfer feels comfortable surfing for porn and even more comfortable using his/her CC online. Spyware, spam, and email viruses scare the surfer away, which means we can't make any money off him.

Good post.

Those of us who are able to adapt and succeed in spite of all those roadblocks are the ones who will never need to seek out a day job ever again. It's been over 5 years since I said goodbye to my old career and I don't plan on ever having to answer to a boss ever again.

Adapt. Look for ways to solve these problems. Ask questions of successful people. Keep your business honest and above-board. And above all else... never quit.

LOL. Yes and the world will end in 2005.
Too bad stats show that each year more and more ppl are surfing, and more and more of those surfers have high speed access.

Spam will eventually get stopped by either TOUGH laws or some kinda filter and for spyware... LOL its over rated.

I have no anti-spyware anti-virus bs software and got 1 spyware ONCE, BIG FUCKING DEAL, i surf porn and other shit 24/7 and it doesnt effect me that much.

Each year online revenue is increasing and online surfers are increasing.... yes that MUST be an inevitable sign that the internet will collapse... let me hit the OFF switch.

i discurage some folks to go on internet if they olny know how to use the power botton and some ppl just lazy to learn compurets.

i've seen cases where programmers were converting txt files to .doc's by renaming them. some people unplag power cords from AC outlets. and some having computers for over 3 years and not knowing how to copy and paste or save something. and i'm not talking about old folks. having these people on internet, and i suspect alot of them is asking for trouble.

i don't mind telling people how to use computers but common, not the copy and paste question in the 20th time.

i leanred computers myself have broken few motherbords and autoexec.bats down the road. all new users must learn DOS to get a basic knowlege before jumping into the ocean.

Dumbass surfers represent some of your conversions.

Some of the best traffic comes from google. Those that earn high keyward placement and then abuse the surefer with dialer loops, exit hell and the like do the rest of us no good at all.

If the first three sites on a keyword at google give the surfer no way out exit hell, a trojan and a hijack, then they will never make it to your site at number four.

I'm not willing to giveup those "dumb ass" surfers. Not every
one has time to become a browser guru. He or she just wants a little porn and I wanna sell it to 'em!

You bring up good points. This industry has always been its own worst enemy.

We have done more damage then Bush has in 3 years as President.

We have been watching the golden goose be strangled before our very eyes, and patted the people on the back for doing it , and we call them "players"!

Best thing I have ever done for SPAM was to download SpamBully. Didn't even hesitate to purchase before trial ended.

I get about 12k spam a month, but never have to deal with them anymore. There were a few mails I had to train it with, but overall it has been great.

The URL is:
http://www.spambully.com
or if you wanted you could get there through this link
http://hop.clickbank.net/?discount20/spam30

There was another service that sent 'confirmation' emails out to senders to verify it was a real email. But everything had to go through them, so I chose the above. Bully is just a filter, on roids really

In the early 90s, lots of people did. People made millions back then selling baseball cards and memorabilia. Even today there are people on ebay who make bank in this market.

Selling porn isn't so different.

It's your job to outsmart the #1 jerks on google, heck, when my sites were running I had quite a few top 1,2,3...spots on google. I was proud of that.
If you're looking to get top spots for "sex" and "hot teens" and expecting those who use those terms to give you anything more than a high bandwidth bill, then you are sadly mistaken.
If you expect revenue from such terms, then it's impossible without using circle-jerks, banner farms and the like, because, like I said, the only thing those surfers will do for you is give you impressions and clicks.

When you target your google customers with meta's that are precise and truly advertise what you offer, you will bring in quality surfers who want what you give them, and in return, will get higher listings on google than the bullshitters.

I've always been all for quality over quantity. I don't want dumbasses on my sites, dumbasses are for circle-jerks.

Granted. Baseball cards made some people money, at one point in history or another. Comparing this to porn is like comparing snake oil to electricity.

Porn is here to stay. It's been around forever. The Romans had it, the Greeks had it, The Egyptians had it. We have it.

The internet will make NO difference. It's just a different medium. If you can't figure out how to capitalize on that, it sounds like a personal problem, not a "The Sky is Falling" problem.

I'm willing to give up signups and customer support emails for an internet full of decently intelligent surfers.

How many times have you gotten emails from a customer or surfers reading "Help me! I can't find the enter link LOL"
"If you send me more photos I will join your site"
"why are all your pics so small?" (last one referring to THUMBNAILS!)

This goes for people who hire designers as well, one lady I worked for last year called me up - "Tia, I need your advice, I want to make money on the internet, and buy a computer, I'm not going to buy a computer unless you can show me I will make money"

So I did. And she did. I built her a website (that indeed made her a profit) and when the webhost dinged her credit card 6 months later (to auto-renew) she went ballistic and submitted a fraud report against me and the hosting company to her cc company!

To hell with that, not worth the headache.

Like I said, when the dumbasses go away, so will the spam.

Can't argue with that at all - agree. ahmmm, some surfers are stupid in the computer use. IF they're searching for free porn, well I guess let them have the crap. Think that the *crap* still chases some of those away I want as conversions.

Yes well I am aware there are different dumbass categories, but for the benefit of this thread in particular, I'm speaking of those who endorse the spammers.

For instance, when I get an email that reads:

"En L1arG77 you r P@E nis"

I don't say to myself "ooh wow, cool! Lemme clicky!"

But, people do - and if you want people like that paying for your content, suit yourself, you're no better than the people you are talking against in this thread.

Point is people sending that bullshit hurt this industry like hell. Many of them high school punks and some make $$ at it. I don't chase that type of customer. Do I want them? Promise they won't be a charge back??? I don't get those anyway. Think I have one growth banner up on of my sites. I don't do email campaigns. Some would same that's stupid they make money.

I like you.

the internet isn't being destroyed, it's evolving.

My 13 yr old boys surf the internet all the time, get viruses, learn how to get rid of them and move on.. it doesn't phase them a bit, where me, it throws me into a tailspin.. that's because I'm not a kid, and I remember when it was a lot easier to surf.

To newer surfers, it's no big deal, they adapt because they've never known it to be any different

If we change with the times we won't be left behind

noway I'm quitting my day job!

Elements of truth in the original post. However it's far more true to say those with vision, a willingness to adapt, a POSITIVE attitude and a little intelligence will still be here in 10/20/30 years time making good money from the Internet alone.

Those without any of those qualities will still be working for someone else bitching each night about the bad day they had at work, how badly they need a break, how the could do with more income etc etc.

i can see your point of view regarding how people are using nasty tactics to get sales/attention/traffic... but i really doubt the internet will die... it's just all these nasty tactics make the surfer smarter making it harder to make sales...

You can make money doing anything. There are some porn sites out there that prove that.

You go too far when you use terms like "destroying". If we got even close, it would no longer be worthwhile for the cowboys so they would quit and the pendulum would start to swing back.

I agree that we are doing an awful lot to screw our own business, but if that is the topic you shouldn't restrict yourself to the techno-trix. Damaging as they are, they don't come close to the harm we have done with years of sites that fail to deliver what is promised on their tours, dubious billing practises, etc.

Plenty of webmasters will jump up to knock the spam emails, auto-installs, etc. But you have to wonder whether that is more because they suffer them than out of any real concern for the surfer. How many (well-known) sponsors would disappear tomorrow if we all stopped sending surfers to sites that were basically crap? Jeez... we still recommend them to each other

Sorry, I don't believe ETHICAL, non-SPAMMING and non-SCAMMING adult webmasters are allowed on this board....
