Dedicated Hosting Question
I have always used virtual hosting, moved some sites once to a dedicated sever but they screwed up and it ended up costing me a lot so I have just stuck with virtual hosting, but it would be nice to pull my sites togeather onto dedicated servers, but never having used one I am totally at a loss as to what specs I need.
Most of the sites I will be running will all run several scripts and most have a lot of SSI. I mainly build low traffic sites 1-5k. I have a few questions if anyone can help out Is running your own dedicated server complicated/ time comsuming. Would it be wise to look for a managed server to start with. Of course I want to keep the costs as low as possible to speed and reliabilty is more important to me than cost. So what is important to speed/reliabity? OS, Memory Harddrive ect? Any tips or advice would be great. Also any links to good writeups on buying/running a dedicated server would be cool Thanks |

they manage the server, have excellent support, dependability, good prices.. they are not a fly by night or just getting started company. they have an established reputation and they wont let you down. if u track down sly rj on this board he works for them. probably work out a sweet deal for you |

You want to go for a fully managed since it tends to be complicated to manage one your own.
Very expensive as well since you would need to have all parts twice. If a part breaks down you want to fix it immediately. I would recommend checking out a host on bo-ard-track-er before you sign up with them. If you think you like a host do a search and look for opions on that host.

Hello NGU,
Hit me up about what we can offer you here at Candid Hosting.com . Not only will we be happy to help you get moved in but we can also give you many of the basic services you are used to getting with a virtual platform. From there we can also discuss the addtional managed services that are available, building a program to meet your specific requirements! ![]() We currently have some great specials available and I would certainly like the chance to discuss the whole package with you. ![]() Thanks in advance,

Thanks for the feedback guys
Khun do you manage your own server? if so how long have you been doing it and have you had any problems also how much does it take up? I think I will go with a managed server, to start with at least, but I am intrested is there any advantage of running the server yourself once you get the hang of it? more control etc Also if anyone can give me any idea on what is needed on a server i.e. how much Ram to get etc and the pros and cons of OS FreeBSD RedHat etc If anyone has a link to a site that has a detailed explaination of everything that would be really great Of course I will discuss all this with whoever I decide to host with but it would be great to have an idea what I am talking about and need before rather than finding out later I made the wrong chioce because of lack of knowledge |

I went the cheap manage it yourself route, then the semi managed route (which was actually worse because you are treated like a stepchild) and finally to a fully managed solution and have never been happier. I did learn a lot on those initial boxes, but I am glad I no longer need to worry about it. Running sites is much more lucrative than figuring how to fix the previous night's cPanel "upgrade".
I would say to get as powerful hardware as you can. Sure a celeron w/ 256meg of ram might do the job for you, but a P4 w/ 500meg isn't going to cost much more. Same with bandwidth - typically the cost from lets call it teir 1 to teir 2 is small... but go over your allowance on that teir 1 and it will cost you more than teir 2 would have. Trying to save money up front can actually cost more once them hun listings come around... If you have no clue how to admin a box, and don't want to "waste" time learning how, you should definately get a managed solution. I would stay away from the "bargain" places that you will no doubt get bombarded with (a lot of these are merely resellers located in oversold data centers with inferior connectivity) and go with a real solution such as M3Server or any of the other real providers on this page. If you have any more questions, feel free to hit me up on ICQ: 129435880. cheers. |

You can get reliable well managed servers at good prices these days. I also recommend M3Server.

Get a nice speed processor (2.0+) lots of RAM ( 1GB) and also a nice 60GB HD for tons of space.......
FreeBSD is the only way to go for a server IMHO. and, talk to www.realitychecknetwork.com about this as well...master technicians as well, all around great staff. |

I've done both.
I've run sites on cpanel, and I've had managed servers. Its nice when you can just email your tech and say "The server is loaded can you check it out?" Of course, its also nice when you can do everything yourself. They both have goods and bads. I've heard that both natnet and webair are good ones to start with. And yea, you want fbsd or linux (I prefer linux....)
