Our cat fell from the balcony - now she can't move!

The official Girls2Models-office-cat Nancy fell last night from the balcony, about 8 yards down into the garden. This is were we found her this morning. She can't move her hind legs anymore. We instantly brought her to the doctor, he did some x-rays but nothing seems to be broken. He suspects that her spine might be injured, but no one can say exactly at the moment. We now have to wait one week, if she can't move again she has to get the needle.

Now we watch her the whole day, she is mostly just laying on one side, not moving at all. Sometimes she tries to get up, but it doesn't work. And she does not want to eat or drink at all. It's so sad to see that.

Hope she gets better, it's like loosing a family member.

If she injured her spine it might just be swelling that is causing temporary peralysis. Did your Vet gove you anything for her nutrition? There's this stuff called "Nutrical" that you can get at petsmart or your Vet's office- it's a vitamin paste, I've nursed many an animal back to health with it. If your cat doesn't start eating soon you may want to look into it.

If it is paralyzed , theres no reason it should be put down. I have had a cat that was paralyzed , and he was happy and content, and lived a rather full life..

I do understand , its a bit more work and i'm not railing on your decision, but if need be ill fly the cat to me and take it , if thats the only other option.

btw , from the sounds of it, your cat is indeed paralyzed

this is exactly what the Vet said - and this is why we have to wait for a week. And thanks a lot for the hint - I will try this.

this is a very generous offer - I hope it will be not necessary. the problem is that we are sometimes a few days away for shootings. normally she could handle that very good alone, she gets enough to eat and drink and plays with her toys.
I don't know if that will work when she will constantly need help. at the moment we just hope that it's just a swelling.

Even humans can suffer temporary paralysis after an injury, but they start to show improvement as the swelling goes down. I hope this is all it is and she will pull through fine.

We had this happen to a cat of ours growing up. She got stuck under the garage door when someone shut the garage door. She wound up being fine after a week or so , her spinal cord and stuff was just swollen or something limiting her movement. You just need to keep an eye on her and if nothing is broken she should perk back up after the swelling goes down.

ACK! Don't tell me these things. I live on the 8th floor and my cat constantly goes out on the balcony and looks down. I always worry about him but I trust that he's smart enough to not do anything stupid.

But after reading this.... I may just lock in him in the bedroom

it's an important for cats to be in a clean place , so you need to
put something (like towel) under and clean it up immediatelly
nothing todo

exactly - you think your cat is smart enough. but she's not! she will do this nonsense until she fails.

if she will get well again, we will add some cat security to the balcony - something like a fence or whatever.

sorry...

My balcony off of my bathroom is the only place in the house that my cat can go outside...But if he fell from that balcony (which is on the second story), he'd be fucked...and if he falls off of the part of the balcony where the driveway is, he's DOUBLE fucked...

I sure hope that doesn't happen.

When I was in my early 20's I had 3 cats. I lived in a 3 story apartment building and the cats used to love sunning out there.

One day a dumb ass bird flew right on top of the rail. Maybe to taunt the cats. Who knows why. My little cat lunged up suddenly to strike and catch the bird but missed and lost his footing and went right over the edge.

I thought oh my God and rushed to the balcony and looked over but couldn't see him at all down below. Even though there were bushes down below from 3 stories up I figured no way could he have lived.

I ran down and started looking through the bushes and all of a sudden I heard meow meow meow and it was him and he was just sitting there licking the dirt off his coat. Not one damn thing wrong with him except looking all dirty.

Sorry to hear about your cat. Give him a day or so. He might just have some swelling thats blocking the electrical signals.
