Technical Question -- bandwidth throttling
For those of you with dedicated servers on dedicated pipes:
Does anyone know of a good way to limit your bandwidth on a server? I tried that throttle mod for Apache, but that just basically refuses connections when the limit is reached. I would actually like to limit the kbps the user downloads the pages of my site. Is this possible? How do the big boys do it? I heard maybe you can do it at the switch, but haven't explored that option... ------------------ |

You can always ask your admin to cap the line for ya if you want. A good isp should be able to do that.

I agree with Floss For Life,
You pay good money for that ded. so your administrator/ISP should be doing that for you. They can easily do it with at least 10 different avenues that could be customized for you and your wants. Don't waste your time, let them waste theirs...that's what you pay them for LOL. |

And besides, do you think they are going to bitch about slowing down the resources you're sucking from them. Unless you are paying by the gig, which most give you a certain allotment and then you just pay over that (which may very well work against my argument LOL
), then it's in their best interest to slow you down, especially if you never go over your designated bandwidth, which is where they make their money anyhow. BTW There is no such thing as a dedicated pipe in the ISP world, unless you have heard of company I haven't, you always share the pipe. LOLP.S. If you do have a company that allows you to be the only one on the pipe...could ya ICQ me? Couldn't wait to jump on that baby. LOL ![]() |

I didn't mean "dedicated pipe" literally -- I'm just using ISP terminology. Meaning, I pay for the size of the pipe, not the amount of GB transferred per month. And you are right, they have taken a reallllly long time to get back to me regarding capping my pipe (grin). Totally NOT in their best interest to do this, especially considering I'm doing adult stuff. I will keep hassling them.
p.s. if you really think about it, the WHOLE internet is really one big shared pipe! |
